Although he has some cool ties to working at Seirra at some point, I wouldn't really refer to MJ for expert in depth knowledge of most things retro gaming. I used to keep up with his stuff for awhile (heck he even posted on RB before he blew up on YT), but honestly the content is just way too basic for my tastes. I like the idea of trying to tackle some PC games this month though. You might enjoy any of these classic PC games that sold a million copies each: PsychonautsI don't really want to consider multiplatform titles if I check out some old PC games. But really, the allergy you have towards Ratchet and the Sly series... absolutely applies here for me. Psychonauts looks utterly hideous to me. And I've known some obnoxious fans that worship it, so I own it on Steam to play one of thesedays, but it doesn't really look like my jam.

Good thing this month doesn't require much expert knowledge then, eh? I'm guessing I'm going to end up messing around more on the PC side as well. I've got Deus Ex installed again, and played through part of the tutorial. Stopped at the stealth stuff because I was tired and needed sleep. I'm also very much thinking about giving a 4X strategy game a go, either a Civilization game or one of the Heroes of Might & Magic games. Apparently HoMM3 is the best-selling GOG game of all time right now? Pretty wild.

Sarge I've played some Heroes of Might & Magic 1 & 2. They're pretty cool games. They feel a little more like RPGs or adventure games than something like Civilization, since so much of it is exploring maps and fighting.

Yeah. My understanding is that they were inspired by King's Bounty? Interestingly, that series also got a well-received reboot. Only The Legend and Armored Princess are fair game for this month, though.

A friend and I played the Genesis port of King's Bounty for most of an afternoon back in elementary. It's definitely the same type of game, now that I think about it. For some reason they also remind me of the 1997 Magic: The Gathering PC game, in that a lot of these games is exploring the map, looking for treasure. I tried replaying that one a year or two ago with all the compatibility settings enabled, but the main mode kept crashing.

I wouldn't really refer to MJ for expert in depth knowledge of most things retro gaming. MJ has always seemed like a nice guy, but in the few videos I've watched of his, I learned nothing I didn't already know. I think MJ's popular angle is a result of educating people who have very limited knowledge of retro gaming on the subject. I've never seen him do a deep dive on anything. But really, the allergy you have towards Ratchet and the Sly series... absolutely applies here for me. Psychonauts looks utterly hideous to me. it doesn't really look like my jam. Well my friend, that is because you have never drank the delicious milk of the Milkman.
I've got Deus Ex installed again, and played through part of the tutorial. You are on the path of righteousness. The hardest part of the tutorial for most people is trying to scam JC.
I'm gonna start on MGS4 after I finish New Vegas. I'm on the main campaign stretch now for that, so I don't think it'll take too long.

That prank call truly made my day. Saw one with Jensen too, this stuff is killing me. Best Sarge plays the game first before hitting up the memes though haha.
The first few times I played Deus Ex and beat it was on the PS2 version actually. I could never go back to it now, it turns Liberty Island into 5 sections with loading zones. This level is merely one seamless map in the PC version. That said the PS2 version had better character models and has a new CGI intro and endings. The intro is a bit abridged though and they cut the conversation some, but it's cool if you guys haven't seen it.

The first few times I played Deus Ex and beat it was on the PS2 version actually. I saw someone play a fair portion of the PS2 version back in 2004. I had already played the PC version by then, so it was underwhelming to me. But they enjoyed it enough to finish the PS2 version. In retrospect, it's impressive a version of Deus Ex could run on the PS2 in any cohesive fashion really. About as impressive as Half-Life 2 running on the OG Xbox.
I've only played through the entirety of Deus Ex one time. I beat the GOTY version back in 2001. I recall putting 30 hours into it, as I explored every nook and cranny. I would do goofy stuff too, like playing basketball or setting up elaborate chain reaction booby-traps in Chinatown. I still remember a lot about the experience, because I found it so captivating.
I don't know how much Sarge will like DE. He's not normally into first person WRPGs, dark cyberpunk settings, morally ambiguous plots, or games that use stealth in a centralized fashion. Also a fair amount of things DE pioneered twenty years ago are a bit old hat now. But on the other hand, I'm glad he's giving it a try, and who knows it may end up being a surprise hit for him. Regardless DE is absolutely a stone cold classic that sold a lot of copies. So it fits this theme perfectly.

Deus Ex was probably one of my last secret random discoveries back in the day. I saw a measly little ad of it in a magazine with a screenshot or two, if even, then I think I later saw it used at Vintage Stock. The boxart was enough to sell me on it and low and behold, one of the greatest games ever made found its way into my hands. I beat the PS2 version several times since I didn't have a good PC growing up, then I turned my friends onto it whom also didn't know about the game (even though some of them were into PC gaming, maybe it didn't have much marketing behind it? Daikatana sucked that all up? lol)... and well the rest is history. I've replayed it many times and I kid you not, every single time I revisit the game, I discover new conversations, secrets, even totally new areas, etc. A remarkably deep gem.
When Invisible War came out, I lugged my Xbox and CRT TV to my friend's place, he had his huge PC and we both played that endlessly into the night. I think we spent an hour tossing bodies into a dumpster because it was one of the first games with a physics engine haha.
