If I remember right, Ex enjoyed the PSP Metal Gear Acid games. Yes I did. Very underrated and criminally ignored SRPGs with a really fun card-based combat system. Also outstanding OSTs. I recommend them to Xeogred.

Oh, while I'm thinking of tactics games... uh, R-Type got not one, but two in R-Type Command and R-Type Tactics II, the latter of which has a fan translation. www.romhacking.net/translations/3136/And for some reason, now I'm remembering that Legend of Heroes began life as a Dragon Slayer game before becoming its own thing. And while not developed by Falcom, Faxanadu is a spinoff from Xanadu. Maybe this counts, maybe it doesn't, but Dragon View is effectively considered Drakkhen 2, and completely changes up the structure (for the better). Which makes me think of other WRPGs... ...and Ultima, which had a ton of spinoffs like the Runes of Virtue games mentioned before, Savage Empire, Martian Dreams, and the two Ultima Underworld games. Oh, there are some fighting game spinoffs, some of dubious quality like SoulCalibur Legends, but also stuff like Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, which I've heard is good. There's also Death by Degrees, which I've heard is... not good.

The Acid games did always look pretty interesting to me. Maybe I'll look into PSP emulation this month... Sarge: I wouldn't call Metroid Prime a spinoff. Timeline wise it was a prequel to most of the games though, whereas Fusion was the next step after Super and is considered "4" a lot of the time. So I can see how one might think that way. And the Prime games are 100x better than Fusion!

The Acid games did always look pretty interesting to me. Maybe I'll look into PSP emulation this month... I can tell you PPSSPP worked fantastically for me while emulating Spiral Chaos. The fan translated version of said game wouldn't run on a real PSP, so I emulated it. I beat the MG AC!D games back in 2014. Here's what I wrote about them seven years ago:
MGA1: "If you're a Metal Gear fan, a card battling fan, and turn based strategy fan... you may enjoy Metal Gear AC!D. The core strategic combat gameplay of AC!D is certainly plenty of fun, once you get past the learning curve. However... slow pacing, occasionally questionable mission design, a clunky movement system and a bad plot sap some of that fun. Stellar music and a rich tech-noir atmosphere will help draw you back in though. Truly Metal Gear AC!D is not for everyone, but for open-minded strategists this is a unique trip. 7/10" Clear time: 20h 47m
MGA2: "Metal Gear AC!D 2 outclasses its predecessor in almost every way. A faster pace, more logical game design, nicer graphics, equally excellent OST and now a plot that a human can understand. New systems are introduced such as partner reaction fire support, automatic Link Action cards, an ecchi factor, and even a stereoscopic 3D viewing mode. That said, AC!D 2's atmosphere is weaker than the first game, and the challenge level has been greatly reduced. The AC!D series is truly weird, but AC!D 2 manages to be truly fun, so give it a chance, even if you didn't find the first game very welcoming. 8/10" Clear time: 13h 24m Considering the series is now going on its 4th entry, yeah, I think the Prime stuff is its own franchise now. Most modern gamers who like Metroid have only played the 3D FPS iteration.

On the subject of card based tactical spin offs, I remember my little brother REALLY REALLY loved the Megaman Battle Network games for GBA when they were coming out years ago, but there's six main series Battle Network games with their own spinoffs now, so I'm not sure if they feel more in the Metroid Prime category at this juncture.

For my personal tastes with this CR month, I'm looking for unexpected offshoots that are one-offs. I've found a few things already I'm personally interested in playing. No SRPGs this month for me though! Although wouldn't you know it, I did beat a one-off franchise offshoot SRPG years ago... ...and I do not recommend it. Though perhaps this offshoot instead, for said franchise.

The game I'm playing this month is Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP. I loved FFT Advance, but never got into the original entry due to the PSP port's unbearable slowdown and my knowledge of English when I played it. Thankfully, my English has improved considerably and hackers were able to remove the slowdown. And what a difference! So far the game has been a blast and I'm hooked on the job system. Can't wait to unlock new classes and abilities

So far the game has been a blast and I'm hooked on the job system. Can't wait to unlock new classes and abilities Final Fantasy Tactics is an absolutely outstanding SRPG, good choice on the version as well. The PSP version's localization is superior to the original PS1 version's, by far. It wasn't that long ago that I beat FFT myself, 2014 actually. When I did so, I beat the PS1 version of the game, except I had the PSP version's script hacked into it. I played the game that way because I wanted the PSP localization, but not the PSP slowdown. (This was all before the PSP version's slowdown was hacked out.) I ended up giving FFT a 9/10, but I didn't write much in my HLTB entry: "Final Fantasy Tactics is hailed as a classic of the turn-based strategy genre, and for good reason. This game is simply a ton of fun to play, with bucket loads of strategic options at your disposal. Throw nice graphics, a phenomenal soundtrack, and a byzantine plot on top and you can't help but love this one." Took me 29h 09m to beat without using any walkthroughs or strategy guides.

Is there an article out there that really breaks down the localization differences? I beat PSX FFT twice and while I personally am not the biggest fan, I recall the script/translation being pretty solid.
