I mean, I won't rule it out. I can't find confirmation right now. But it does apparently introduce three new dungeons into the mix.
EDIT: Oh, did you do the Arcane Labyrinth? Apparently it contains a lot of good equipment. Maybe that's why you had an easier time. That isn't in the GBA version.

Hmm... that definitely doesn't ring a bell reading into it. Chances are I was maybe just super hard pressed to finally push through it, so I could say I've beaten FF1-10 in some form haha. The crazy thing is I beat it back to back alongside FF3 (NES, first time), FF4 (first time for the PSP version), and FF5 (GBA, first time), all the summer of 2013. I was possessed! That might be the last time I played some classic FF though... hot dang, that FF6 replay needs to happen soon!
Estimated completions over the years:
FF6 - 5? 5+? FF4 ~ 3 (I don't think I ever really bothered going through all of the SNES version actually) FF7 - 3 FF10 - 2 FF1 - 2 (PSX, GBA)
FF8 - 2 failed replays. Still cherish the memories of my first 100% run though. Just get bored of its mechanics after awhile nowadays... FF2 - flushed the PSX and GBA versions after awhile FF5 - flushed the PSX Anthology version after a dozen hours. The translation/script was awful, even to my young self. The GBA version made me a fan and had a lot of personality.
Glad I finally beat FF12 last year. Now, I just need to beat Lightning Returns to finish that trilogy... but it's low priority. It's better than FF10-2 at least. Not finishing that crap.

I don't even know if I can count the number of times I've beaten FF6, but it's probably at your number at a minimum. Lesse here...
FF: 5+ (NES) FFII: 1 FFIII: 2 (NES, DS) FFIV: 5+ (SNES, DS once) FFV: 1 FFVI: 5+ FFVII: 1 FFVIII: 1 FFIX: 1 FFX: 1 FFX-2: 0 FFXI: 0 FFXII: 1 FFXIII: 1 FFXIII-2: 0 FFXIII-3: 0 FFXIV: 0 FFXV: 1 FFVIIR: 1
So clearly my repeat plays are what I had access to when I was younger.

Yep, heh. And it helps that the classic ones are more in the 20-30 hour ballpark for the most part.
FF1's short length and customizable party setup lends itself well to replays.

Oh, yeah, definitely. I made several types of runs. Strangely enough, though, I liked four Fighter teams. Although towards the end, the lack of truly great weapons/armor for all of them makes them less effective in the final fight. Probably would have been better to throw a Ninja in there with FAST. I didn't know back in the day how powerful that spell was.

FF: one aborted attempt in 1990 (made it to the marsh cave) FFII: never played FFIII: never played FFIV: one aborted attempt in 1991 (made it to the moon) FFV: beat once in 2007 FFVI: beat once in 1994 FFVII: beat once in 2008 FFVIII: never played FFIX: beat once in 2007 FFX: three aborted attempts since 2007 (made it 1/3rd of the way once) FFX-2: never played FFXI: never played FFXII: beat once in 2012 FFXIII: never played FFXIII-2: never played FFXIII-3: never played FFXIV: never played FFXV: never played FFVIIR: never played
I guess it's obvious that I haven't prioritized this series.

Am I the only one here who finished The After Years? I actually borrowed a friend's Wii and bought the game because I was that hyped about a new 16-bit style RPG (they weren't as common then). It's not very good. It's plays like fanfiction because it has the same starting point as a lot of it does: it's a direct sequel to a story that didn't need one. As such, nothing of interest happens in the story. I don't even remember what it's about. What I do remember is that the game makes you backtrack through long stretches that include a mini-dungeon (a cave, I forget the name) constantly, to an extent I have never seen in any of the literally hundreds of Japanese RPGs I've played through. I think you go through that cave like 5 times at least.
The weirdest thing, though, is that the final dungeon is far longer than the rest of the game. It's one of those huge 99-levels dungeons with superbosses everywhere that you usually only find as bonus, post-game content, but here it's just the regular final dungeon. I couldn't believe how it would just keep going on and on at first. I kept thinking it had to be ending soon, until I realized what was up several hours in. I think the whole dungeon was about 10-15 hours long. It's insane.
So yeah, it's a 3/10 or 4/10 to me. Very safe to skip.
As to the main games, I finished all of them from 1 to 7, all original versions except FF2 (made it halfway through, got stuck due to its brokenness, switched to GBA), then FF9, and none after that.

In FFL2 tonight, I finished the Giant's world, then did the organic dungeon inside of Ki's body (that was interesting). I then saved at Apollo's palace. I've started running from more fights, just to stave off some of the grind. My only significant complaint remains the unbalanced encounter rate.

It says a lot, and I assumed it was an update to the GBA version. I have never beaten FF1, FF2, FF3, or FF4. I figured the PSP versions of those would be the way to do it. I do have them loaded on one of my PSPs, so that's a step forward. Although, the DS version of FF4 is supposed to be really good too. So I'm a bit torn on whether I should do FF4 on DS or PSP. If you're looking for opinions, I can't say that I'm a fan of the voice acting in the DS cutscenes. Some changes also feel like half steps, like they tried to make it look like the SNES original but also incorporating Amano's artstyle into the models and I dunno. I guess I'm just a grumpy old guy (even though I'm not that old) but there's something about the original sprites that aren't replicated even on the PSP remake. Your information on its difficulty correlates with what I've read about it. I played it for a bit and didn't find it any more or less challenging than the original though so YMMV (then again, I remember the Playstation and Super Famicom versions best). The only version I did beat was the GBA one, though. RPGs are best when they are on a portable device, like a good book, in my opinion. I've finished Final Fantasy I a few times. At least once if not twice on GBA in English and once in Japanese, once on Wonderswan, once on PSP in English, and once randomized for NES. It's a great game and it's crazy randomized. I finished Final Fantasy 2 on GBA once. I can't say that I disliked it but once was enough for me. I finished Final Fantasy 3 once on DS. I got far on Famicom but I started finding monsters that needed Magic Knights to defeat them with specific weapons that I didn't have so I didn't finished it. I finished Final Fantasy 4 once on GBA like I said above. I finished Final Fantasy 5 on Super Famicom with a translation patch and on iOS. I really liked the iOS version to be honest. Pixel-by-pixel, 8-directional movement is great in my opinion. I finished Final Fantasy 6 once on SNES a long time ago emulated. I've recently been going through a hacked version that upgrades the translation and fixes some bugs. I finished Final Fantasy 7 twice, once on PS1 and once one Switch. I liked it a lot more the second time around. That 3x speed is a godsend for a game like it. That said, it was a good game even without that. I finished Final Fantasy 8 once on PSP. Once was enough and any time I start it over I get side tracked and bored drawing magic. I finished Final Fantasy 9 like... twice? Maybe three times? And I'm on-and-off going through it again on Switch despite how nasty that port is. I want to try to Moguri patch on PC but I keep hitting a login window on the PC version. Why does FF9 need a login for?! And why has no one brought it up? After FF9, there's only one other mainline Final Fantasy I've finished: Final Fantasy 15. Both Pocket Edition and Royal Edition. Even though it's not turn based like I was expecting, it's a fun game. I had to ignore that it's part of the Final Fantasy mainline series to enjoy it, though. I've also finished Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I cheated through Final Fantasy Tactics for PSP just to see what was so good about it, but I still held the opinion that I enjoyed FFTA more. I also know that I finished FF12's sequel on DS a long time ago but I'd be lying if I remember anything about it. Finally, I also finished Final Fantasy Dimension- I thought it was great and would've been a worthy contender for a numbered mainline entry but alas; I wish it'd get ported to Switch and/or PC (especially PC for longevity). I started playing a bit of Makai-Toushi SaGa on my Wonderswan. It's making me really considering shelling out for a Wonderswan Color that I can mod- it doesn't look like Swan Crystals can be modded (for now). Something that I find odd is that I can't seem to reorder my espers' learned abilities. It gives me the double hand as if I can reorder it but it won't let me move it around. Pretty weird. I also found out that this version has the chainsaw glitch fixed so I may just play the GameBoy version instead after I finish Final Fantasy Legend 2. Not because I want an easier game, I just think it'd be funny! Speaking of Final Fantasy Legend 2, I finished the story in the World of Edo and have arrived to the Nasty Dungeon. Enemies keep hitting my guys for 0 ~ 300 hit points. I may have been running away too much in the previous world (in an attempt to conserve my human's weapons). So I'm going to try fighting a little more, get my martial art skills down to one use each (to use on bosses). I don't see any equipment that I can upgrade. I think the smuggler was selling the best equipment I could buy but he's gone now (oops).

RPGs are best when they are on a portable device I agree. It's really nice to be able to have a whole little world and all its characters in a portable format. I find that I get through RPGs faster when I can just pick up 'n' play them.
