First Bald Bull fight for me. This is definitely THE game where input timing needs to be perfect, haha. I'm assuming there's not much delay in emulation via FCEUX... The lag is very minor, but in a game like Punch-Out, it might actually matter.

Hah, yeah the Buffalo SNES pad is my main for old Nintendo emulation.
I was half joking though, my inputs definitely feel crisp. I just wish I could figure out how to do some special moves... I've glanced at some videos and stuff, but I don't want to overlearn too much already and cheat myself. I'm using save states per match though but that's about it. Trying to brute force it as Tomorrow's Joe would!

I can usually take the emulation delay right up until Tyson. At that point, I have to luck out if I'm not playing on a CRT or low-latency display. You might want to use something like RetroArch with run-ahead enabled. In a lot of ways, the game is a puzzle. It's figuring out each tell and how to dodge or counter it. In general, I always dodge left (simplifies reactions), but anything super-fast I block. There are a few fights where you'll have to block until you run out of hearts, which alters their behavior to come at you differently. You also have to be careful where you use your uppercuts. If you just use it right off, a lot of them will dodge. You have to make sure it's during a sequence where you can get in a longer combo, then use it during that. But in general, the later fights will rarely give you occasions to get them and you have to just fight as legit as you can. Ex: If you were on an LCD monitor, then your display lag was likely quite low. Computer displays tend to have much better input latency than consumer TV sets. But yeah, my first win against Tyson was actually on a flat panel, emulated on an original XBOX. The key is if you can get lucky enough in the first 1:30 to only get knocked down once (or none if you're really lucky). But it's easier to get through that unscathed with the lower latency. When I truly locked in, I was dodging everything... but I do think my USB controller did add some latency at times (it's possible to "miss" a frame with USB since the delay, while less than a frame, might still cause you to miss 25% of the time if it's 4ms, for instance). Either that, or my buttons are starting to crap out - I've put a lot of wear on this pad.

Sarge - Yeah I was playing on a laptop with a built in LCD screen, not an LCD HDTV. I was using a USB controller, though hardwired, not wireless. I've read that wireless controllers can introduce additional lag depending on factors. I think that Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! are both excellent games. However, I agree they are more like action-puzzlers than any kind of serious sports simulation. Still well worth playing, so I'm glad Xeogred is working his way through a bonafide 8-bit classic. Someday I gotta get around to the Punch-Out!! that was made for Wii. I've read it's pretty tough, especially if you use motion controls. But I don't intend to play that for this CR. I'm trying to find stuff that leans more towards realism than arcade-ism.

Ex The Punch-Out series will be his gateway drug into boxing sims, hopefully. As for me, I got one game I plan to check out for tonight.

The Punch-Out series will be his gateway drug into boxing sims, hopefully. I have some boxing and UFC games for PS3/360, but I feel like those are too new for this thread. Technically by HRG rules they aren't, but I mean from a "spirit of the concept" aspect. In addition to other games I've found, I may also check out the arcade version of Punch-Out!! for this CR though. I don't recall ever completing it, and it's different than the NES version. Anyway these are the boxing games I've spent the most time with, excluding Punch-Out!! stuff: I recommend any of those.

There are similar games from the PS2, too, if you want to dig into that.
Anybody interested in Firepro Wrestling? This was a legendary import-only series for a long time, but now there are actually legit releases. It's a mostly 2D series, so it has a retro feel.

Yeah Punch-Out is definitely a weird gap in my gaming resume. So far I'm digging it and can see how it has such a legacy. Not sure this is a genre I'd get super hooked on though.
There are definitely some diehard mega fans of Firepro Wrestling from what I've gathered. I think the series has always had a lot of customization that fans really enjoy about them. For me as a kid that got into wrestling in the late 90's during the "Attitude Era" (Stone Cold, The Rock, the NWO, etc), I was really into the N64 wresting games. But that's kind of the end of that. I don't like the old ones much and the new games sound terrible.

Like racing games, I think wrestling is a genre that really benefitted from 3D, actually. The physicality of it. Those were actually based on a Japanese series, initially, called Virtual Pro Wresting, by Aki Corp. It might be worth looking into some of their other wrestling games. For the short time where I watched wrestling, I was more of a WCW fan. Punch-Out is its own thing, with a few clones out there. Most boxing games aren't based on strict patterns like it, but rather try to mimic actual boxing logic. That's why I hope I find one with a nice feel so that I can try and get into it.
