The PCE and PCE CD doesn't have a large fighter library, and few exclusives in the first place, so it even being a 7/10 isn't bad. That's how I feel about it as well. There's another PC Engine CD exclusive fighter I plan to play before end of month. And a few more shmups. And an action-adventure as well. I do enjoy this system's CD games library, even if most of them are mid-tier in quality. They're still contextually interesting and crafted from '90s aesthetics I very much appreciate.

The CD games are actually a lot more niche than the HuCARD games. You saw a few big third parties working on the plain PCE, like Namco, but by the time the PCE-CD became NEC's main platform, the Super Famicom had taken over in Japan and they couldn't ignore the Genesis' popularity outside of Japan, so they had no resources to devote to the PCE-CD's more niche market. So when you look at the developers, they're mostly really small, niche developers from the Japanese computer scene (which was probably no longer viable by then for most companies). Fill-In Cafe, companies like that. Like, who made Renny Blaster? J-Force? That's the company known for making most of Dragon Force, and then going bankrupt, leaving Sega to finish the game itself. Even Hudson started making SNES games. I'm still curious about some of those PCE-CD RPGs...
BTW, y'all need to play Download, it's my favorite PCE shmup, and it's got a cyberpunk setting, which I know some of you will appreciate. Download 2 is on the PCE-CD, but it's a much more standard game. Not bad or anything, though.

Might just miss out on this month while finishing up some other titles, but YS Book II TurboGrafx 16 version is on my soon to play list. One of my favorite games from these consoles though were Blazing Lazers (Gunhead) made by Compile.
Pretty manageable game for those that have not played a lot of shmup's either. There is a upgrade system with orbs (various colors that can stack) which can quickly make you very powerful. Took a few runs to clear but once you get an idea of whats ahead you can stack upgrades on your next run to turn the tide.

BTW, y'all need to play Download, it's my favorite PCE shmup Noted. I put in my retro to play list. But this theme is about CD games for TG16/PCE so I'm sticking to those for now. Might just miss out on this month while finishing up some other titles, but YS Book II TurboGrafx 16 version is on my soon to play list. Well you can always participate belatedly if you wish. The Ys games on TGCD definitely have nice OSTs. This track just makes me want to grab a sword and chop through an overworld: And yeah man, Blazing Lazers is an excellent shmup, I 100% agree.

The Ys soundtrack is so delicious. This is a good thread. I never explored the PCE CD really in depth beyond the RPG stuff. Fine console though. I may get to playing something next week, time permitting. In the meantime, my humble collection:

You just can't beat 90's cover art. Damn nice set there.
The PCE-CD library seems smaller than I would have expected and obscure like toei was saying. Though it seems more interesting than the Sega CD library. Both are pretty fascinating though. 16bit era games, with CGI/FMV capabilities and CD quality music... it's a pretty unique vibe and great when you're in the mood for it. Even if the OST's don't always fit the games, it's still kind of cool to me haha.

TurboGrafx CD > Sega CD
Both have excellent games and bad games, but the Turbo stuff is of higher quality overall. Sega CD has too many "enhanced" ports of Genny games + cornball Western meme stuff.

The PCE-CD has way more exclusives than the Sega CD, so that's what makes it the clear winner. If we're only talking about the North American releases, then it's debatable, but on the Japanese side, the PCE-CD adds a ton of exclusive RPGs to its extensive shmup library, while the Sega CD adds... barely anything. There's really only a small handful of Japanese Mega CD exclusives that seem interesting. Shadowrun, definitely. Maybe a couple RPGs. That's about it.

Awesome collection! Some real gems in there and they still look great.
I was late to the PC Engine/TurbGrafx as a whole (First console was Genesis) and only just been slowly catching up recently with the PC Engine Mini release. Has to be one of the greatest shmup consoles easily.
On RPG side, Far East of Eden has always looked like cool series.

bonesnapdeezAin't nothin' humble about that collection my dude. Keeping it real. Wish Blood Gear would get an English fan translation. - I agree with you guys who say TGCD/PCE CD > SEGA CD. All day every day. - bosh I 100% agree that TG16/PCE/CD altogether is shmup heaven. For some reason shmups became very prolific on the platform. Thankfully they don't require English translations to enjoy. - Xeogred I bet you'd like this: If only it had an English translation.
