XeogredI have not played through Spriggan Mark 2: Re-Terraform Project but it looks highly decent. If you play it and it's good I'll play it too. I agree with Sarge, because it's a shmup the translation barrier isn't a game breaker (just inconvenient). With Fiend Hunter you need the information from NPCs for game progress, so the translation barrier IS a game breaker.

Yeah, I'll consider checking it out this month for sure. Hopefully it's good and in the vein of a few of those Gun Hazard / Metal Warriors styled SNES mecha games.

Dayyyyum, that's some slick PC-88/98 styled pixel art right there. Looks like a decent time. PC-98 artwork was what it reminded me of, too.

My long weekend is here and I'm ready for more of the most PCE gaming I've done in my lifetime (no joke).
A part of me wants to get to the regular PCE and check out Legendary Axe this month too, since toei talks about it as much Ex does King's Field.
I plan to play these at least:
- Sylphia - Spriggan Mk II - Exile

Sylphia is a good choice for a quick play, since it's too easy to last very long. It plays well and looks and sounds good, but it'd have left a more lasting impression on me if there was a bit of challenge (and I say this as someone who's mediocre at shmups at best).

It seems a bit average compared to other Compile shooters, but probably a decent time. I had it downloaded so it's kind of a "why not?" choice for me haha.

Title: Rayxanber IIIPlatform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1992 Developer: DataWest Publisher: DataWest Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 2/5
Rayxanber III is a Japan-only PC Engine CD exclusive shmup. This is a horizontally scrolling shooter with an unusual power-up system (shot direction depends on power-up icon rotation when acquired) and a quick-dash ship maneuver. Getting the right power-ups in the right configuration at the right time, and using the quick-dash maneuver are vital to success. There's also a build meter that unleashes missiles that can go straight or explode like MIRVs depending on when the player pushes the fire button. Despite its unusual weapon system and detailed boss graphics, Rayxanber III is too punitive and bare bones to recommend to anyone except hardcore vintage shmup enthusiasts.
+Above average OST.* +Detailed boss graphics. +Occasional puzzle bosses. +Unique power-up system. +Stiff challenge. -Awful sound effects. -Stage design can be really unfair occasionally. -Not fun crude and primitive bullet hell with some bosses. -Stage scrolling can be painfully slow at times. -Why force a cool down on the boost maneuver?

Title: Asuka 120% Maxima BURNING Fest.Platform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1995 Developer: Fill-In Cafe Publisher: NEC Avenue Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 2/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Asuka 120% Maxima BURNING Fest. is a Japan exclusive, PC Engine CD exclusive, 2D fighter being part of the Asuka 120% fighting game series. Its premise comprises a bunch of female combatants from the Ryoran Girls' Private Academy. Each year its students hold a fighting tournament, with each lady representing her specific area of interest (science, sports, theater, music, etc.). The combat system follows a standard fighting game scheme with kicks, punches, and special attacks... nothing special there. The Asuka 120% series always relied on cute female fighters to sell its games and I have no problem with that. +Easy fighter to pick up and play. +Cute and energetic female fighters. +There's a watch mode to just see AI fight AI. +There's a story mode (that remains completely in Japanese to this day). +Cutscene graphics are nice. -The sprites are primitive compared to later series' entries. -The OST is nothing to get excited about. -No innovation to the fighting mechanics whatsoever. -Some of the special attacks' balancing is suspect. -Opponent AI is easy to exploit. Ex's time to beat: 25 minutes (beat story mode using Cathy) Ex's rating: 7/10

The PCE and PCE CD doesn't have a large fighter library, and few exclusives in the first place, so it even being a 7/10 isn't bad. When I tried them all out, none of them felt particularly satisfying to me, but then I'm probably spoiled by arcade fighters from that era. Maybe that PCE CD Tengai Makyou fighter is worth a play.
