YS IV is fun but kicking my ass. I'm glad to see someone besides just Xeogred and myself participating in this theme. But yeah, Ys IV on TGCD... Sure it is lauded by many, but personally I did not enjoy it. A big part of why is it's not balanced well at all. It's like Hudson expected the player to want to grind incessantly every half hour. As in intentionally grinding up another 5 levels every 30 minutes. Just not my kind of fun. I prefer to level up proficiently by just killing enemies that you encounter normally, rather than having to grind-kill them over and over. So I got about 2/3rds through Hudson's Ys IV and dropped it. I did finish Tonkin House's Ys IV: Mask of the Sun on Super Famicom, but I did not enjoy it either. The only version of Ys IV that I had a good time with was the one made by Falcom ( Ys: Memories of Celceta) I definitely recommend it. All I can say is grind more and you should make it through Hudson's version.

Title: GötzenDienerPlatform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1994 Developer: Gainax Co., Ltd., Studio Alex, Ltd. Publisher: NEC Home Electronics, Ltd. Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 2/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 2/5 Quick Thoughts: GötzenDiener (German for "idolator") is a Japan-only PC Engine CD exclusive isometric action-adventure. The plot concerns a princess who must rescue herself after her saviors die attempting to. She takes up a sword exploring an isometric dungeon, fighting enemies and solving environmental puzzles (via spell casting and object push/pull). Even though this game remains untranslated at the time of this writing, 99% of the gameplay is text-free so that's no hindrance. GötzenDiener is far from a smooth polished fun experience, but it is a unique one.
+Fairly unique game design.
+The princess saves herself. +Nice cutscene graphics. +Environments exude atmosphere. +The spellcasting system is unusual. -Clunky aggravating unpolished controls. -Slow meandering game speed. -Huge mostly empty levels. -Puzzles are banal, combat is boring.
-The OST is tepid at best. Ex's time to beat: ~3 hours
Ex's rating: 5/10

There's a few more games I plan to play for this theme. I may play into August here.

I'll try to play one more game for this theme before moving to August's theme.

I'll try to play one more game for this theme before moving to August's theme. If you're looking for a good Ys on TGCD, I recommend: Ys III on TGCD, although not developed by Falcom directly, is still good. I've personally beat the TGCD version, my thoughts from about ten years ago: The OST is legit lit: The guitar riffs man... This is not an unfair score. Gotzendiener was a good idea on paper, but its execution was a mess. Definitely feels unfinished.

We're well into August now, but I'm not done with this theme yet. I intend to give the Xak games on PCE-CD a fair chance. Hopefully this week I'll chisel out time to start on Xak 1. I plan to play the PCE-CD entry in English using real-time machine translation, maybe that'll work.

Good luck! I played it in Japanese and occasionally used Google Translate on the words I didn't know.
I've already talked about how awesome it is.
(but wait....... how is this related to Hudson Soft??)

(but wait....... how is this related to Hudson Soft??) I messed up and replied to the wrong thread, meant to reply to this one. I'm going to use GoogleTranslate via an LDPlayer4 overlay window. If it works well I'll provide screenshots.
