I've never seen a Jaguar or X'Eye in real life. But I respect the crazy chutzpah of folks who actually bought that stuff back then. Unfortunately the hype was a lie.

Has anyone here played Cho Aniki?
I love this game! Competent shmup with some unique sprites. Only played the PC Engine version, not tried any of the later games in the series

Cho Aniki was made by the team behind Wings of Wor on the Genesis, and the original at least is somewhat similar, if you want something in that vein. The main difference is that Wings of Wor is darker and grittier.

Title: Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross 2036Platform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1992 Developer: NCS Corporation Publisher: Masaya Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 4/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick thoughts: Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross 2036 is a Japan-only PC Engine CD exclusive shmup. Thematically this shmup serves as a sequel to the anime film The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? The protagonist is the female pilot Mylene Jenius, who flies a Veritech mecha-spacejet fighting against the menacing Zentradi alien race. A standard 2D shooter in general, but with a shop system, and boss fights using 360 degree turret firing mechanics. Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross 2036 is recommended to classic Macross fans, but is mandatory if they are also shmup fans.
+Captures the theme of its source material strongly. +No nonsense oldschool shmup design. +Above average graphics (with animated dubbed cutscenes between each mission). +Nice OST. +Shop system. -Cheap hits on occasion. -The dubbed cutscenes should have had subtitles. -Enemy bullets can hide in background art at times. -The subweapons overheat a tad too quickly. -The final stage is long and brutal. That's some pure Macross lovin' right there. Ex's time to beat: 54 minutes Ex's rating: 8/10

I sampled some of that one earlier this week and yeah, the graphics (accuracy to the anime, also the cutscenes) and the music blew me away. The gameplay not so much... but I only played one level or so. I'll definitely give it more time.

I'll definitely give it more time. It does become more interesting design-wise the deeper you get in. Some of the bosses are puzzle-y, there's a mazey corridor stage, it's fun to experiment with the different subweapons. There's a stage that has excellent parallax scrolling and faux water reflections too. It was really impressive graphically given the platform and age. There's another shmup, action-adventure, and fighter I plan to check out before month's end.

Man that looks way better than the Famicom Macross.

Title: Advanced V.G.Platform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1994 Developer: Technical Group Laboratory, Inc. Publisher: Technical Group Laboratory, Inc. Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick thoughts: Advanced V.G. is a Japan-only PC Engine CD ecchi fighter, being part of the Variable Geo game series. Advanced V.G. originally released on PC Engine CD, but was later ported to Super Famicom, PlayStation, and Saturn with less lewdness and enhanced gameplay. The gameplay is very influenced by Street Fighter II (arcade mode, two player versus) and is quite similar in execution. The exception being Advanced V.G. includes a well developed story mode full of animated cutscenes. Advanced V.G. will certainly not please prudes, but ecchi enthusiasts won't mind getting bruised in these battles. +Simple man approved. +Nice graphics from background to sprites to cutscenes. +Controls are concise without lag. +Sprites have good hit detection. +Above average difficulty. -Computer AI can outright cheat at times. -Sometimes special moves don't register (or the timing is too tight). -Cutscenes are dubbed Japanese with no subtitles. -The last boss is a punk little boy you have to fight THREE times. -And one of those times he is INVISIBLE. Video starts at a track I liked a lot.
Ex's time to beat: 55 minutes (finished story mode) Ex's rating: 7/10

Hah wow, Advanced V.G. takes me back to some stuff I can't discuss here. Let's just say that character designer covers many genres. Think they're still around and worked on some newer stuff like Code Geass as well though.
Now that I finished Game of Thrones, I should get more PCE gaming in this weekend.
