I'm surprised at how many of these I've actually played. Played and played through are different experiences. The coolest thing about Colony Wars is that it's non-linear. If you fail a mission that doesn't necessarily end the game. Instead the plot forks to a different mission. Meaning there are missions that you don't see if you don't fail at times. This creates a weaving plot with different mission paths and alternate endings. The scope of delineation was very ambitious, especially for a (wholly competent in every way) arcade-combat-space-flight-sim. I gotta get around to Colony Wars' sequels someday.

Everytime I hear those opening seconds of that track (like in the 1997 video on the last page)... the boost of serotonin is real.

Oh, yeah, but played through is also valid in this case. Guess it was that period of time where I actually had a ton of time to burn through games.
Silhouette Mirage is another I've always wanted to play through. I briefly had a busted copy from GameStop. I noticed that Blade Runner is also in the mix. I've had that one for forever now.

I keep dodging Grandia and was sad when I saw it on the montage because it suddenly feels like it could be Grandia's time to shine... but I'm going hard on Xenoblade 3 for the next few weeks, lol. Don't think I have room for another JRPG.
I'm kind of leaning towards Hexen II since I have it on Steam. Think former user Tsumuri thought I'd like it and it's kind of like Unreal-esque.

I'm a big fan of Albert Odyssey - a very standard JRPG, so I guess it's not for everyone - but its original release date (in Japan) was in 1996.

I really like Albert Odyssey, too. The Saturn game, which is a turn-based gaiden, unlike the SNES games which seem to be atypical SRPGs. I've finished... maybe two thirds of those RPGs. The only one I haven't that I'd consider is Moon. But isn't that only on Switch or something? If it's on Steam, it could be interesting... EDIT - It is on Steam. About 20 hours, according to HowLongToBeat. RadRedRooster Typically we tend to be pretty generous with the theme definitions, so I think either version being released in 1997 is good enough in this case. I will say that no game evokes 1997 like Parasite Eve to me, in terms of aesthetics. - EDIT 2 - Actually came out in '98, even though it takes place around Christmas '97. Oops. As a rec, I love Alundra, it's probably my favorite ARPG. I really wonder what I could play from that year? - After looking around, here are my candidates: - Moon Remix RPG Adventure (PSX) (20 hours, 20$ on Steam) - Cotton 2 (lighthearted shooter, interested in giving it a shot at least) (Saturn) - Castlevania Symphony of the Night (I know you all love it, not really feeling like it right now, but that could change) - Final Fantasy Tactics (tried it before, didn't get into it, unlikely) I might end up playing nothing again like some kind of bum, but I'd like to try Moon and see if it's any good after all. Say, Samurai Shodown RPG was from 1997, wasn't it? Maybe we can manifest its translation, finally.

I've been like that recently, too, unfortunately. Haven't participated nearly as much this year as in the past. Maybe I'll find something to glom onto this month!
I will note that the excellent Shining the Holy Ark was a 1997 release - definitely one of my favorite Saturn games. And yes, let's will an SSRPG translation into existence!

Moon. But isn't that only on Switch or something? As you noticed it's on Switch and PC, but it's also on PlayStation Store now as well: store.playstation.com/en-us/concept/10001077/>Alundra I plan to give this another chance someday via the Un-Worked Designs patch. I did enjoy its plot and atmosphere when I played it many years ago. It's possible my aggravations with this game were more Wrecking Design's influence. >Castlevania Symphony of the Night I know you're "not feeling it" but I think if you invest a few hours, you'll feel it.

So I originally thought that they really only made enemies tankier and bosses a bit less so but hit harder, but that apparently isn't true. They buffed pretty much everything to some degree. It makes for a tougher game for sure - you might like it a lot better if enemies aren't as spongy. But I remember most of my issues (small ones, honestly) were that the puzzles could occasionally be obtuse and require some very precise timing/platforming, which isn't surprising since the game carries so much Landstalker DNA.
