I was also thinking bi-monthly would suit most of our paces better.
...here's my full list of games beaten this year:
King's Knight (NES) (January - why does this feel like two years ago) Final Fantasy VIII (PSX) (February) Exile 2: Wicked Phenomenon (TG-CD) (February) Mamono Hunter Yohko (Genesis) (February) Gangs of London (PSP) (March) Hakuouki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi (PSP) (March) Deadly Strike (PS2) (March) Street Boyz (PS2) (March) Wrath of the Black Manta (NES) (March) Cape Gun (PC) (March) Shubibinman 3 (PCE-CD) (March) The Ring: Terror's Realm (Dreamcast) (April) Nanashi no Game (NDS) (April)
So, 13 games. Looking back, I was actually in a gaming groove from February to early April, and I had plans to play a bunch more PS2, DS and PSP games, among others, but I just got busy with other things. Haven't finished a game in 4 months. I still do play casual nonsense sometimes (Cape Gun, a little Super Puzzle Fighter 2 for a while), but yeah. I've been meaning to finish Game Center CX2 forever, I had like 5-6 longer games I really wanted to play this year... we'll see.

I ebb and flow a lot. Right now is simply a low. I'm actually sad I missed the PCE month, lot of games from then.
Huh Goldeneye was 1997. I haven't played that probably since it came out. I wonder if it holds up.

I was also thinking bi-monthly would suit most of our paces better. I'm good with bi-monthly next year. We can do whatever you guys want, insofar as it increases participation and interest. toei you beat more games than I thought this year. But since you slowed down in recent months it kinda feels like you stopped gaming. I understand the ebb and flow aspect though, as paulofthewest mentioned. To an extent at least. Personally I won't go more than a week without playing a video game if I can help it. Sometimes I won't beat a game for a month or two though, if I'm playing through a very long RPG. That's why I prefer Club Retros that have short genre themes. Helps to punctuate the longer games I play.

Title: Dynasty WarriorsPlatform: PlayStation Region release played: USA Year of release: 1997 Developer: Omega Force Publisher: Koei Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 4/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: Most people know Dynasty Warriors as a "strategy" musou series, but the original series entry was actually a 3D versus fighter. 3D fighters were very popular in the late '90s, so it's no surprise Omega Force/Koei punched in that direction. Like the rest of the series, the aesthetic is steeped in traditional Chinese history and mythology; its 16 fighters being warriors from the Three Kingdoms era. Unlike most fighters of the time, fighting in this game utilizes martial arts and weapons in a realistic manner, with parrying, deflecting and throws. Dynasty Warriors is a solid 3D fighter but lacked the pizzazz needed to differentiate itself from legions of genre competitors in its day. +Very good skeletal animations for characters. +Complex defense system using parries, deflections, and blocks. +Background art changes on time of day (morning, noon, dusk). +The OST is enjoyable. +Enemy AI is challenging on harder difficulty levels. -The defense system has a learning curve alright. -Six of the sixteen playable characters are hidden at start. -Not enough female characters at all. -No story mode (though each character has a unique "ending"). - Soul Edge came out the same year for the same platform and destroys Dynasty Warriors. Ex's time to beat: 20 minutes (played through P1-Battle mode as Zhang Fei) Ex's rating: 7/10#1 ass baby!

Huh, guess I wasn't ever aware it had fighter roots.

Don't mess with ASS.
The humble beginnings of Omega Force's cash cow. Even weirder than Soul Calibur's obscure "Soul Blade" first entry, at least they're the same genre. I wonder if this was a flop because the competition for 3D fighters must have been quite high around then. Virtua Figher and Tekken having it locked down.

3/5 is generous, from my point of view. The Dynasty Warriors 3D fighter is unbearably slow and dull. I'd consider it D-Tier among 3D fighters; sure, there's worse, but most of them are better. And while there aren't a ton that are weapon-based, Soul Edge / Blade makes it look so, so bad (as EX mentioned).

Virtua Fighter and Tekken having it locked down. From what I've read, those two were the kings of the 3D fighter scene in the late '90s. VF had the arcade locked down, and Tekken was king on consoles. Soul Edge / Blade makes it look so, so bad Yep. Without hesitation I'd say Soul Blade is the best 3D fighter of the fifth generation. Dynasty Warriors released half a year later and still didn't have a chance. I don't blame Omega Force for taking DW in a completely different direction for the sequels. If you can't beat 'em, go elsewhere.

Still might try to check out Hexen II. I just now realized it's on the Quake engine which certainly makes sense, coming out a year after it. Watching videos it almost looks like Hexen is the action/Doom version of Thief.
But yeah, the atmosphere looks awesome and for still being on the Quake engine with these big open environments, that's super impressive:
