I agree the SEGA Genesis version is better balanced. Overall the Genesis version is my favorite of all the ports I've tried. But I had never beaten the classic arcade original version of this game, so that was neat. There's a few more classic arcade versions of games I intend to beat for this theme. By that I mean I haven't yet beaten the original arcade versions so they are "new to me" in that regard. All the arcade games I've picked out have console ports that I played or beat before though.

Ghouls n' Ghosts incoming? Nah, legitimately beating the SEGA Genesis version of GnG (on real hardware) was enough for me. But today I finished:
Title: Space Harrier Platform: Arcade Region release played: USA Year of release: 1985 Developer: SEGA Publisher: SEGA Graphics: 5/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 5/5 Fun factor: 2/5 Quick Thoughts: Space Harrier is a third-person rail shooter developed by a Yu Suzuki lead team, and released by SEGA in 1985. Originally produced for arcade, Space Harrier has since been ported to over twenty different platforms, including a polygon-based remake for a Sega Ages PS2 release. Space Harrier used SEGA's 16-bit Super Scaler tech to create pseudo-3D sprite-scaling at high frame rates coupled with an analog stick for movement, and a cockpit-style hydraulic motion simulator cabinet that tilted and rolled during play. Space Harrier was an incredible looking and feeling game for its time, it blew many minds in the arcades of its day. Nowadays the tech is not impressive and the gameplay is highly thin and repetitive, I wouldn't say it's aged well.
+The 3D effect was certainly novel for its day. +There is a palpable sense of speed.
+The color palette and gradient skies remain pleasing. +The bonus stages are kinda fun. +The cheesy voice samples are amusing.
-Extremely repetitive gameplay, every stage plays the same (takes ~20 minutes to beat feels like an hour). -No special weapons or power-ups. -No two player simultaneous play.
-The final stage is a crappy boss rush. -Good luck 1CC-ing this chaotic mess.
Ex's time to beat: 20 minutes Ex's rating: 5/10
Note: As a kid I had Space Harrier 3-D on Master System and Space Harrier II on Genesis. I never beat either of them. Now I remember why.

I put a little time into Ico last night. I fiddled with PCSX2 and it looks a lot clearer if I bump up the internal resolution to 2X, which really helped with the overall clarity. I think what's going on is that it's both de-interlacing at the native res, and scaling to a mismatched 720p resolution.

I've never beaten the Space Harrier games, but have played that and Out Run a ton in the Yakuza arcades.

I got really into Space Harrier once and had a blast. There is a method to the madness.

Have you guys played Panorama Cotton? It looks like maybe the coolest thing to come of that style. Granted maybe that one is better compared to Star Fox? Space Harrier kind of has more of a racing-game like vibe to it... just with a jetback and lasers to mow down aliens. EDIT: Or wait, is the dude just flying without a jetpack? lol

I've played Panorama Cotton, it's "OK". Regular Cotton is funner. Star Fox destroys Panorama Cotton though. The Space Harrier guy just levitates on his own best I can tell. Although on the bonus stages, he rides on a white fluffy dragon reminiscent of Falkor from The NeverEnding Story.

Yeah, like most of those games, Panorama Cotton only looks cool. It plays weirdly. The original arcade Space Harrier has a sense of speed that those other games can't replicate, and it actually handles much better once you learn how.

Dang, well that's all a bummer to hear. I thought it looked amazing. Guess it's a bit more style than substance.
