Yeah. I like how the "story" was some cute short cutscenes without dialogue in between the different planets/worlds. I should also mention teaming up with King DeDeDe in this one was neat. There were some mine cart stages too, but 1000x easier than you get in a DKC or Mega Man X...
It's boosted my interest in Klonoa now too, since the style seems kind of similar. But the new remake of that one does look a bit more ideal than the original release now. It also seems to have a top tier OST like Kirby64.
Wonder if the N64 has more solid sidescrollers?

Klonoa / the new remake of that one does look a bit more ideal If you're talking about the Wii remake, I've beaten that one: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/wii/954341-klonoa/reviews/166743You might like Mischief Makers (Treasure made it) but deep down inside you really want to play:

Dang, how could I forget that gem? Revolutionized 3D platformers and was probably the biggest influence on Nintendo's success going forward. Breath of the Wild wouldn't exist without Earthworm Jim 3D.
True story, I loaded up Clay Fighter 63 1/3rd tonight and wanted to throw up.
I beat Mischief Makers back in the day and liked it a lot. It hasn't grabbed me the few times I've tried emulating it over the years now though. It's an odd game for sure.

I suspect the new remake is at least somewhat built on the Wii version? I beat that one, really enjoyed it. Mischief Makers is also a good time - there's an adjustment period to how to play it, but it's very good output from Treasure.

I'm definitely not as keen on Klonoa as Sarge is. Between playing the PS1, GBA, and Wii Klonoa entries, for me these games are 7/10 at best. That said, I'd be interested in Xeogred's take. Maybe he'll really enjoy the series.

Title: Altered BeastPlatform: Arcade Region release played: USA Year of release: 1988 Developer: SEGA Publisher: SEGA Graphics: 5/5 Audio: 5/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: Altered Beast is a 1988 side-scrolling arcade beat 'em up (with no Z-axis). The game's claim to fame was its strong graphics and audio (for 1988 mind you), and the ability for the human (zombie?) protagonists to morph (alter) into powerful beasts. This twist was enough to make the game a hit and be ported to 20 other platforms (seriously AB has to be one of the most ported games of all time). The plot is a very simple save the princess affair, as was incredibly common in the '80s. Altered Beast may seem quaint by today's standards, but in 1988 this was a technical tour de force worth rising from your grave for. +Awesome graphics for its time (pretty good music too) +Being able to alter into monsters was amazing for a kid gamer.
+Really cool boss battles. +Gotta love punching those zombie heads off. +Supports two player simultaneous gameplay. -Only five short stages. -No unique protagonist beast for the final stage. -Stage designs are very simple. -Repetitive game design to a fault. -Replayability is minimal. Ex's time to beat: 16 minutes
Ex's rating: 8/10*
*Score buoyed by nostalgia. I beat the Genesis version of this game many times as a kid. The Genesis version is nearly identical to the arcade version. The arcade version has slightly nicer special effects at times and clearer speech clips. But by and large the Genesis version is 95% identical in presentation and execution. SEGA did a great job porting this to the Genesis and hence Altered Beast was the original pack-in game for the console.

I don't love Altered Beast, but I also think it's a lot better than a lot of folks that drag it in retrospect. The Genesis version is a lot more fair.
I'm going to have to test Ico on real hardware - the visuals in PCSX2 are quite blurry, and I need to figure out if it's a video setting (possible), or a limitation with the way they displayed stuff on the PS2.

I like it well enough now, though I owned it as a kid and almost never played it as I also thought it sucked, so I get it. The main difference between arcade and Genesis is that the arcade original has way more enemies. Honestly too many to handle without taking unavoidable damage sometimes, or at least it seems so (there's probably some pro somewhere who's found a way to do a no-hit run or something). So, less fair, as Sarge pointed out.
