AKA Harder Mode.

Heh, perhaps. I'm not sure it hurts quite as much with slowdown for Contra III, given where it usually pops up.
I just know I wouldn't dream of going at Gradius III without the slowdown. Now that has to be brutal.

I've been really getting into Super Mario World romhacks recently. I'd always loved watching the really hard "Kaizo" stuff, but it always felt unapproachable, though appealing in the same way watching crazy DDR players or bullet hells was before I got into those.
I started out with Kaizo Kindergarten, and while its more like an extended SMW tutorial than an actual game, I really enjoyed it. Even if someone had no interest in playing hard SMW hacks, I'd recommend anyone that likes SMW to mess around with it a bit. Within an hour I got why dozens of hacks of this game come out every year, its engine is insane. It was also just a trip to learn so, so much about a game that I've been playing since I was a child.
I played Quickie World after that, which is an actual Kaizo hack, although apparently its on the easy side of the really-damn-hard spectrum. It beat the shit out of me, but I managed to tackle it after maybe 6-7 hours.
Aside the SMW stuff, I also played through Reserve_22//, which is a hack of Super Mario RPG. I don't know whats up with the name, but it was a neat little hack. Most SMRPG hacks just make the game harder, but this was rebuilt from the ground up, and is only about 30 minutes long. Its a little janky here and there, but I love the SMRPG engine, so I still enjoyed my half hour with it.

I've been watching streamer OatsnGoats these past few nights play Kaizo Super Metroid. It's absolutely insane and excruciating to watch (with how brutal and tough it all looks). I've seen people play a lot of "Impossible Super Metroid", which looks like an absolute joke to me compared to this...
Over at YT this did make me land on a cool and fun looking Super Metroid hack though, Hyper Metroid:
Looks like a lot of work went into the graphics for this one, which is what I usually like to see with big romhacks.
I still haven't really played much of any Super Metroid or Link to the Past romhacks though. Despite being my two favorite games of all time, the romhacks I've sampled have yet to really pull me in or seem cleverly designed. It's hard to nail that authenticity, something that feels like a legit release or official sequel. Maybe someday I'll find a NES Metroid Rogue Dawn answer to Super.

I feel like that about a lot of hacks myself. It's rare to find a master-level designer like Nintendo was (not to mention they had a lot more resources!), so it shouldn't be surprising most user-generated content comes up short.

I wish there was a good level editor for NES Bionic Commando. I would make an unofficial sequel for it.

I'm guessing the one on RHDN doesn't pass muster.

I'm guessing the one on RHDN doesn't pass muster. It may pass muster, I don't know. I wasn't aware it existed. I looked a few years back on RHDN for a BC editor, and couldn't find one. I'll mess with this one though, and see how intuitive it is to use.
