My original Xbox is on its 3rd disc drive now. That's been its bane for me.
My Xbox 360 Model E is still rocking years after years, no issues.

Mine hasn't shown any issues until now, but I suppose it is quite old at this point. It's an older Elite model, so I think I may have gotten it around 2007. I've got another 360 I bought from a friend, I'll see if I can transfer my stuff over there instead if I decide to play more 360 stuff. Or get a replacement laser, as cleaning the lens didn't do the trick here.
I had huge disc drive problems on some of my older original XBOXes. But I've got a 1.1 with a Samsung drive (as opposed to the terrible Thomson ones) that works like a champ.
EDIT: Interesting, there's a UK release that has all three Dark Souls games in it with the DLC. I already have DS2: Scholar of the First Sin, but this might be a good way to get all of them in one go. Going to see if I can swing it for cheap.
EDIT 2: Or not, getting the complete versions of the other two would be cheaper.

Samsungs were supposed to be the best. But my original Xbox had a Samsung drive, it died then I put another Samsung in it, and that drive died as well. Both within a few years. These were both new Samsung OEM drives. That Xbox currently has a Phillips drive in it that has remained working, albeit it is loud. Hopefully it'll last, 'cause all I have left is a Thomson drive.
I own that European Dark Souls PS4 trilogy box you're talking about, the one that comes with all the DLC on disc (well three discs - one per game). That's the version I used to beat the first Dark Souls. Don't recall what I paid, I think around $40 brand new. But that was two years ago, pre-pandemic gaming prices.

It's still around that price. I'll do some more research and make sure DS3 has all the DLC on the complete version as opposed to a code before I pull the trigger on anything.

Xeogred I almost bought it the other day but picked up Kabuki Quantum Fighter instead, since that was new to me. I'll probably end up getting Blaster Master and giving it another go! Been a long time.

It's still around that price. I'll do some more research and make sure DS3 has all the DLC on the complete version as opposed to a code before I pull the trigger on anything. Fair enough. I'd just be stoked to see you play through the entirety of Dark Souls. I think if you did so, it would change your mind about the Souls series in general. It will take a few hours to "get it", but once got it's amazing. Even if you don't come away loving the game, you still will have beaten an important milestone in this medium. So it's a worthy scholarly endeavor if naught else. - KazinI never beat Blaster Master as a kid squarely because it has no password or battery backup save. To expect someone to beat the entirety of that game in one go, was asking a helluva lot. You'd have to spend a long time memorizing its entirety and getting crazy good at the game. In my book that's artificial longevity as opposed to legitimate challenge, let alone good game design. But BM's aesthetics and OST are outstanding, so that helps. The game really does feel like it's own self-contained alien world, no small feat for its day.

Agreed on the aesthetics and OST. The gameplay is pretty good, too, just way too difficult and as you say, too long without the ability to save. I see why people are recommending save states for me haha

It's also worth noting the Japanese version has unlimited continues.

Started a new game in Rune Factory 3 last night (hope that's alright since it's not December yet lol). I was originally going to play on Steam Deck with higher than DS standard resolution, but I do *NOT* recommend that for RF3 at least. The graphics are made specifically to look good only at native DS resolution, and look terrible uprezzed. So I booted it up on my flash cart on my DSi XL, and it looks great. I guess it depends on the game - Dragon Quest IX looks great uprezzed, for example.
Anyway, game feels like a Rune Factory game for sure. I leveled up walking and sleeping immediately which I always find amusing. Haven't done a ton of combat yet, as the game has me slowly unlocking the first set of tools via missions. How do I access the quest/mission menu? Surely it has one, it'd be really annoying to trek back to the bulletin board to confirm objectives. Also, weirdly, attacking takes RP in this game, which isn't the case in 4 and 5. Not sure how I feel about that yet, but presumably you mitigate that via food or something when you unlock that.

Yeah I definitely need to finish Brain Lord. I'm a huge 7th Saga / Mystic Ark fan, as I think everyone knows.
In other news, I played some Blaster Master. Probably haven't touched this game in over a decade. I like the aesthetics a lot, as well as the swapping viewpoints. No idea what I'm doing or where I'm going though, which I would guess is a universal experience among those who have played this. Kind of reminds me of Rygar, Legacy of the Wizard, Majou Densetsu II, and other games where I kinda just roam around until I get stuck and die. This is fun though. I'd like to finish it someday.
