We continue 2023 with the dual-month theme concept. The theme carries through two consecutive months, prolonging the amount of time members have to participate. The theme for March and April is "Third Generation Games". That is, playing video games that released during the third generation of the video game medium. The "third generation" is roughly defined as occurring from 1983 through 1990. Third generation gaming platforms (according to GameFAQs):Action Max | Amstrad CPC | Atari 7800 | Atari ST | Bandai RX-78 | BBS Door | Casio PV-1000 | Commodore 64 | Famicom Disk System | FM-7 | MSX | NEC PC98 | NES | Oric 1/Atmos | Sega Master System | Sharp X1 | Sinclair ZX81/Spectrum | Super Cassette Vision | View-Master Interactive Vision
As always, feel free to ask for genre recommendations from our very knowledgeable members.

I was convinced that I'd pull a swerve on some of you here with an idea I had on a PC game... but it's 1993, lol. Guess it might not totally fit, but there is some overlap with these platforms into the early 90's. Hmm...
Going to be more active this theme though. I'm glad we have some 2nd gen fans (Dr Bone's expertise) and gave it an earnest look but some things never change, that'll never totally be my generation haha.
I'd like to focus on some Master System stuff for awhile here. So if anyone has some favorites from that platform let me know.

I've been looking forward to this one! NES is probably(?) my favorite console of all time. So to kick off the month appropriately, I think I might play thorough the original Super Mario Bros. The last time I beat SMB was in 2015, and that was the All-Stars version of the game. I can't even remember the last time I played through the OG. I'd also like to set a goal to try a system I've never tried before from this generation (or at the very least a system for which I've never completed a game). I'll have to think on that one, although PC98 might be the most attractive option as far as that goes. Edit:I'd like to focus on some Master System stuff for awhile here. So if anyone has some favorites from that platform let me know. If you've not tried out the SMS version of Ninja Gaiden, it's plenty good. Totally different game than its NES counterpart (though still quite challenging IIRC).

Huh, that's an interesting SMS pick. I'll look into it.
Have you played SMB2-J by chance? I grew up playing the Lost Levels SNES version a ton, but finally played the NES version a few years ago. It was fascinating to see some of the new graphics and stuff. It's still wacky/brutal SMB2-J though, haha. Such an interesting piece of history with Nintendo...

I really like Zillion 2 on the Master System. Pure action game, half side-scroller and half hoverbike shmup.

Master of Darkness has been one on my mind, heh. I've beaten GG Aleste 1-2 via the Game Gear. Were the Master System versions better or worth playing? First Zillion not worth it? Looks... odd.
Short list of old SEGA stuff I've beaten in the last decade via HLTB:
SMS: Sonic Chaos Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Streets of Rage GG:GG Aleste GG Aleste II Ristar Sonic Blast Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble

Were the Master System versions better or worth playing? Power Strike and Power Strike II on Master System are completely different than the GG Aleste games, even if they share DNA. Power Strike is decent while Power Strike II is definitely worth playing. I love the first Zillion as it was SEGA's answer to Metroid in ways. But it is very difficult and asks a lot of the player's memory. Few players have the patience for it. I beat it as a kid because I had endless free time and limited amounts of games. I doubt you would like it, so I recommended its sequel instead. Zillion II is far more accommodating being straight linear action.

My gaming stuff is all packed away so I won't be joining this thread in earnest for some time. In the meantime, some thoughts about the systems I own.....
NES (+ Famicom / FDS) is just phenomenal. Duh. Still astounded by the breadth and quality of the game library. My second favorite system after the SNES.
Master System is so intriguing. Always felt like the reputation of the system hinged on a single game, which is Phantasy Star (best 8-bit RPG). Lots of janky games and a lot of stuff that tries to emulate the NES classics (just not as successfully). Still a fascinating system; love the colors and yes I am a PSG appreciator. Oh, and play Ys!
The Atari 7800 is like a third gen console with second gen games. The controller is kind of ass; like a 5200 controller without the keypad... still clunky with the stick and two side buttons (yes I know about the Euro controller, it's very rare). Some cool arcade ports and beefed-up 2600 games. The backwards compatibility is probably the best thing about the system though, lol.
Commodore 64 almost feels like it spans three gens, in terms of the game library. I mean, it has stuff like Sea Wolf and Gorf, and then Ultima 1-6, and then later on, Street Fighter II! Many of the multiplat games are more playable elsewhere, though the visuals and sound are iconic.
"MSX" is almost like two systems. The MSX1 (which I have) feels very late second gen / early Fami / SG-1000. MSX2 is where you get to Metal Gear and Vampire Killer plus floppy disk RPGs like Ys and Xak.
I have a lot of options. As a very loose goal I suppose I could play one NES game, one SMS, and one 7800 game. Maybe more!

I might have to look into it, although I know by reputation it's even tougher than SNES Lost Levels which already pushes my SMB skills to their upper limits, lol. I have to admit I'm curious about it though!
