After making it through 60% of the game, I dropped Sands of Time. The platforming is not enough to offset how boring and tedious the combat is.

Yeah, not totally surprised to hear that.
I remember the sequel going pure action and trying to be really dark/edgy.

Dang, sorry it didn't hold up for you. I love me some Sands, but it has been some time since I played through it (again).
As for Ristar, I absolutely dig that game. Great stuff, very much in my wheelhouse. I'd take it over the Sonic games, no lie. (And I think those are good.)

There's a X-Files survival horror game on PS2 that actually looks not bad. Definitely very derivative, though. It seems like an exact mix of Resident Evil 1-2 and Silent Hill 1-3, at a glance. Kinda disappointing that it seems so zombie-heavy, though. It doesn't have to be Resident Evil, X-Files does have monsters sometimes but it's mostly about investigating aliens and conspiracies, and here were see Mulder gunning hundreds of zombies down.

Yeah I've usually heard good things about that one actually.

There's a X-Files survival horror game on PS2 that actually looks not bad. The X-Files: Resist or Serve got fairly decent reviews, it may be worth playing. The same developer did 007: The World is not Enough for PS1, that one was lauded.

Yeah I don't think I'll be getting anymore in. I did play a few missions of AC: Last Raven though and it seems like it should definitely be better than Nexus. So I'm excited for that. I can save that one for another day. I probably would have played Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness if I was up to that one, haha. I still might try to get to it and Chronicles this year... I have two good choices for the next theme so far. Maybe I'll start one of them soon.
FYI: I played Project Eden on PC. One of the best games of the entire year for me.

I fell off the wagon, for some reason wasn't feeling the PS2. This next one will be interesting - I've probably got more unplayed in that gen than anything.

I do feel the 6th gen is a bit of a specific mood more often than others. I catch myself being a little too harsh on it over the years sometimes though. For ages I was kind of turned off by JRPG's on it too, since it was stylistically such a big change from the 16/32bit days. Also have to hate when they have forced awful voice acting, haha. And 6th gen FPS's are a bit rough nowadays, if you can't tweak the controls much, or have really bad framerates. But some of the best games I've played in the last few years have come from this gen and been some of those amazing RPG's I overlooked back in the day, like DQ8, SMT3, Front Mission 4, the Shadow Hearts games, etc. There's still a lot in this gen I look forward to digging into. But yeah it's rough in spots. I feel more critical about this era in retrospect now even moreso than the PSX days. Could just be me though. This generation is now more than -double- our requirement for what is deemed classic gaming. But maybe some of us veterans here agree with me, in a way this generation still feels semi modern haha. Perhaps that's why it still feels like an awkward period to me in ways. Whereas the PSX/N64/Saturn and late 90's feels like a time capsule to another world still. But what can we say, generational leaps were just far more massive and interesting back in the day. Each one is such a drastically different flavor, so I'm never surprised if some people have stronger cutoffs and opinions about the old generations. It's interesting Ex spent most of this theme hitting up GBA/2D stuff though. There probably is a vault of those games I'd really enjoy myself from this era.

FYI: I played Project Eden on PC. Fixed. I do feel the 6th gen is a bit of a specific mood more often than others. Seems a lot of people automatically equate 6th gen as "PS2" but there are plenty of other 6th gen platforms (GC, DC, Xbox, GBA, NGPC, WSC, N-Gage!). That's why I hit up Neo Geo Pocket Color, because I was weak in beats there. But I will beat a PS2 game before I wrap this theme up.
