I just finished ALIENĀ³ on the NES. Even though it's published by LJN, I didn't find the game horrible (I especially liked the music). The game does have its fails, however, such as the time limit, and having to be on the very far side of the screen to make it scroll. The graphics and music seems pretty rad. Never knew there was an Alien NES game.
I see what you mean about the scrolling... still not quite as bad as NES Turrican, oh man.

I have definitely heard good things about Alien 3 for SNES. I'm pretty sure SNESdrunk liked it, and I see it on a lot of "hidden gem" lists. It really is surprising, given the LJN logo... but at the same time, LJN does have a few non-stinkers in their library, like Jaws, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and True Lies. But it really does look like most of their oeuvre revolved around licensed dreck.

Weirdly enough, despite my being such an NES hound, I don't think I've even played the NES version. Maybe I should give it a shot.

Phew, I've finally beaten Dragon Quest(/Warrior) on the NES using the Delocalized patch. An hour or so in, I patched the ROM with the Doubled hack, and restarted the game. I've mixed feelings about this version; I like the simplicity of it (a pure focused quest experience), but it's also the game's biggest downside; 90% of what you do in Dragon Quest is grinding for experience and money, while battles are just exchanging attacks, and healing when you get low on HP. Even with the Doubled patch (and a guide) it took me almost 7 hours to beat the game. I should try the GBC version as I don't remember the SNES remake becoming this much of a chore.

For reference these were my times on the SNES versions: Dragon Quest Super Nintendo 4h 30m Dragon Quest II Super Nintendo 13h 55m
I enjoyed DQ1 a fair bit but that version certainly doesn't last long haha. Now I enjoyed having more characters in DQ2 and seeing the evolution of things, but honestly 60% of that one was kind of a slog. There is a TON of sailing around the ocean which got old. Then even in the SNES version it has a huge difficulty spike near the end and required a few hours of grinding. I used a guide for this one too. So I bet I saved like 20+ hours honestly compared to the NES version.

All the remakes tweak the experience values significantly. They're far breezier than the original, which indeed is about 90% grinding. In its context, the game was very good - it effectively created the console RPG. But as is the case with most trailblazers, it was very quickly improved upon. I don't recommend it to most folks these days unless they're curious for historical purposes. Also, the US version actually has some graphical improvements over the Famicom release, and the first two games on Famicom used really long passwords and not a save battery. Ouch! tcrf.net/Dragon_Warrior
