Because it's a first-person dungeon crawler that happens that have a very awkward "real-time" (ie 10% speed) battle system. It feels closer to a bunch of older computer dungeon crawlers than it does to a proper console-style action RPG.

toeiI wouldn't call KF's battle system awkward, nor is it as slow as people make it out to be. (You and I have had that debate twice before though, so I won't get into it again.) I do think it's fair to call KF a dungeon crawler, but KF also has aspects of action-RPGs that a traditional dungeon crawling game like Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey doesn't. KF has free movement not grid movement, real-time combat not turn-based combat, you play as a single character not a group of characters. Stuff like that. However, there is still the matter of the first person viewpoint, which is in absolute contrast to your usual console action-RPG.

Yeah, it's kind of a fine line. It's definitely slow, but contains elements of ARPGs. But it also doesn't adhere to most console-style conventions, instead mirroring games like Ultima Underworld, which also doesn't get an ARPG moniker. I think one could make the case either way, honestly.
Speaking of UU, I really should play through it one day. The thought is definitely appealing to me right now.

Might sound surprising since I generally like sci-fi more than other genres, but I liked Ultima Underworld more than System Shock. You can definitely see the Deus Ex DNA in UU, since there's friendly NPC's around and all.
That said, I sadly never officially beat UU. I remember getting quite far and into the second to last floor I believe. It suddenly turned into Super Mario 64 and the terrain had lava pits everywhere. The spell system was insanely wack in the game, I did know a levitation/float spell... but the controls were still half the battle. I guess I lost the drive and fell off the game around there haha.
UU2 looks freaking cool and the actual game world part of the UI is a lot bigger. Definitely excited to check it out sometime. Maybe later this year...

I have only played UU2 (back in 1999), and I didn't finish it. You have to really take notes and pay attention in UU2, in order to handle the back half of the game. There's some cryptic (but not unfair) puzzle stuff in it. But the gameplay of UU2 was really damned good, it was fun to play. However, Sarge was talking about UU1. I don't have any experience with it. I know UU1 is importantly historically, and was a technological marvel in its time. It's probably still fun today, but definitely RTFM material. Did you dudes know the PS1 got an UU1 port? Japan-only: - Also as to our discussion above, if you want to play King's Field in a true dungeon crawler format, check out the King's Field Additional games on PSP: I wish these were available in English. Although, apparently people are starting to use the idea I talked about years ago to play Japanese games in English, even if they aren't officially translated:

So I just tested the translation tech the guy was using in the video: Um, yeah, I think there's some promise here.

RetroArch has a similar feature, and one that is probably a bit easier to use. You can have a translation database running in the background, and you map a button on your controller to translate the current screen. I played around with it with Surging Aura, and while it wasn't perfect, it definitely has some promise.

That approach sounds great too. I'm just glad to see tech developing to aid us in playing Japanese games that don't have official or fan translations. Even if the translation is rough, as long as it's enough to catch the gist, that would go a long way to playing many games.
