Beat the arcade version of Marvel Super Heroes via the MiSTer. Fun game, definitely not quite as bonkers as the series would become, though. I had trouble triggering the Gem moves because of my button mappings, and I didn't dive into the settings to fix them. My brick wall boss wasn't even Thanos at the end, it was friggin' Juggernaut. Hits like a truck, and range to spare, plus he has Super Armor that lets him tank the first hit in a combo. I wonder where he falls on the tier lists for that game?

Yeah, definitely my favorite in the series. Probably 9/10 for me. It has a better flow in my opinion than the others. I saw some folks gripe mightily about finding all the secrets and how unintuitive some were, but... yeah, that doesn't bother me.

Luckily there's not any gated content in this one with the secrets. I think you get like a one screen difference in the ending or something? lol. I liked the collect-a-thon fever of the others back in the day, but not so much when I revisit them. I always try to get all the Bonus or DK coins that I can along the way, but I wish you could just easily have access to those tougher secret world without all those requirements. It's really annoying how in DKC2 you can only access one level at a time depending on where you warp from, so you have to repeatedly go back to the main world map and move around a bunch. Weird idea. Probably doesn't make much sense on paper but those who have played it know what I mean.

Since when are secrets supposed to be intuitive anyway

While some say you just randomly jump down pits... well, there might be a few of those, but in most cases you can just catch an eye on it just barely on-screen. But I guess back in the day with overscan, you might not see the telltale signs at all. It was the same way with Donkey Kong Land. But yeah, at least there were indicators that you hadn't cleared out a stage, so it was just a matter of exploring thoroughly.

I loved and still enjoy the original DKC. I got the game for Christmas of 1994, it blew me away. Not just for the graphics (which were outstanding on a CRT at the time), but the awesome OST, fantastic level designs, general atmosphere... yeah it's a 10/10 platformer. Sadly I hated DKC2, never even bothered to finish it. DKC2's got such trash level designs. Very monotonous environs and so disingenuously sadistic compared to the first game. Hope you love spikes and wasps kids, 'cause we got spikes and wasps! Still haven't played DKC3 because DKC2 was just so awful. Since when are secrets supposed to be intuitive anyway Since the Everybody Gets A Trophy generation decided to play vintage games. Edit: anayo if you want to see high res renders of the sprites, check out the official game manual: www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/common/pdf/CLV-P-SAALE.pdfIt's full of 'em. Cool way to see what the graphics (even texture mapping) looked like before being shrunken and degraded.

There's also the weirdness of 5-1 having 3 secrets in one, which eventually leads to that rare blue 3-up balloon. I was able to find that one as a kid though.
I'll never forget one of my friends and I accidentally discovering this glitch. We wanted to submit it to Tips & Tricks but never did haha... it's pretty easy to replicate when you know it.

For the record, even though most pure platformers bore me very quickly, I think DKC is great, too. Maybe my favorite game of this type.
