2c) Warcraft II: Beyond The Dark Portal (human campaign) 26) The Operative: No One Lives Forever 27) Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3D 28a) Warcraft III (Human Campaign) 29) Descent 30) Quake Mission Pack No. 1 Scourge of Armagon 31) Moto Racer 32) Sin 33) Dungeon Keeper 34) Half Life Blue Shift
Half Life Blue Shift is basically Half Life in abbreviated form. You’re working in a science lab when a teleportation experiment goes wrong, aliens pour through the woodwork, then soldiers show up to kill all the witnesses, including you. You must find a scientist who knows how to operate a teleportation machine to help you and your coworkers escape to safety.
I enjoyed this, but not as much as Half Life’s other expansion, Opposing Force. Opposing Force was also a short romp through Black Mesa, but it had brand new weapons, enemies, more ambitious level design, and left me feeling that I had learned new things about the world of Half Life. Blue Shift didn’t really check these boxes for me. Instead it feels more like a retread of Half Life. By Valve standards I’m not sure Blue Shift is so great. Of course, as a Valve game, it is much better than other FPS titles. So if you must play absolutely everything Valve and Half Life-related it’ll be worth your time. Everyone else can probably pass on this.

Ya, that was basically what I remember. I enjoyed Half-life so Blue Shift was fun, but have nothing extra over the regular half-life experience.

anayoIIRC don't you play as Barney in Blue Shift? I remember enjoying it as well. Reviewers at the time acted like Blue Shift was crap and not worth playing, but I disagreed. I remember the expansion pack having a good sense of humor. I do agree Opposing Force is better though.

Beat Power Instinct Matrimelee. I remember trying this one out back when it got dumped, and it's a really nice fighter, but I'm pretty sure I never beat it. Well, I did. And let me tell you, despite not being an SNK game (this one's by Noise Factory), it has the SNK boss syndrome for sure. She doesn't really follow the same rules, as almost all her attacks are unpunishable on block. My eventual strategy ended up doing a double-jump in place when she did her charge in attack (which has buzzsaws in her feet, okay) and hit her coming down with a two-hit (if I could get the timing right) combo. It took me a while to get to that point... but it's done. Anyway, I still think it's a great game. Feels like a really nice, top-tier Neo Geo fighter. 8/10, despite this little lady giving me fits. Yes, this is the final boss, and despite being called Princess Sissy... she ain't no sissy.

Princess Sissy has great art design. Not sure I want to know what's in that box though. (Holy hand grenade?)

Guess it's a little pop-out... fish? I'm pretty sure I also saw a sword shoot out of it. Anyway, inspired by Same Name, Different Games' 100th episode on Contra (and watching Joe play on stream tonight), I made a run through the arcade original Contra. It isn't a bad game, but it's incredibly clear how much the NES game improves on this foundation. My primary gripe is the aiming - it has that sort of semi-swivel to the diagonals that gives you more shot directions, but really just makes it where it's harder to respond to threats. I died at the Energy Zone in my first try, and then barely beat it on my second, as the game limits your number of continues. It's also incredibly short - Snow Field, Energy Zone, Hangar, and Alien Lair are all squashed into one level, and it's really weird to experience them like that. Final score? This one's tough - while incredibly important, there are a lot of games that I'd rather play. I'll say... 6/10. But it directly led to a 10/10 game, so no hard feelings here!

T-Minus 3, 2, 1... until Sarge does more annual runs of NES Contra.

Man, I almost always beat it at least once a year. It's only like 15 minutes. What I do need to do is make a run at the second loop. Or play the Japanese version, which starts at the US second loop difficulty.

SargeThe MSX version may be worth a run, just for something different:

That MSX version looks tedious. I would never have the patience.
Sarge will beat it in no time.
