Ah, okay. Got a feeling you'll like MGS5 more. It's interesting that it's the most gameplay-heavy and story-light of the series.

The fact that MGS5 goes hard on gameplay and eases up on story exposition sounds ideal to me. I always enjoy MGS gameplay, but I rarely enjoy MGS writing.* Yes, I'll be hitting MGS5 up next. But as its not quite 10 years old yet, I'll be talking about Super Peace Walker on the other side of this board. *Ergo I may never "play" this: Granted I've never met anyone online or offline that has.

I might have downloaded it at some point, don't remember if I actually finished it. Or even played it, although it seems like I did. I do remember it coming out, though.

It is interesting to get a take in 2024 on Ground Zeroes. Didn't some character die in the ending cutscene? Maybe that's the one key point one could miss by skipping this entry, but yeah. It was as Ex noted, the Fox Engine was taking forever to develop and people were itching for a MGS game, so they gave us this little super demo. I can confirm at the time nobody was really complaining, $20 was a solid investment. I think people that 100%'d it could get like 10-20 hours out of it. Now here's a crazy thing, I don't recall much in TPP proper having elaborate cool bases like this. It's weird. Looking forward to see what Ex thinks. I'll throw some opinions out later on when he's far into it or finished. Guess you didn't mind the Keifer Sutherland replacement for Snake? If there was any controversy back then, it was obviously this one. I have other nitpicks about some VA's in this era, but I think the guy who played Kaz/McDonnell in Peace Walker, GZ, and TPP, was really good and a highlight.

the Fox Engine was taking forever to develop The sad thing there is the Fox Engine only got used for MGS:GZ and MGS5, and a few soccer games. >I don't recall much in TPP proper having elaborate cool bases like this That's disappointing. I was wondering if MGS5's open world (I've read it has an open world, not sure if it's a true open world in actuality) would be dotted with a dozen big ass bases like this one. >Guess you didn't mind the Keifer Sutherland replacement for Snake? I didn't really notice to be honest. I have mixed feelings about that. To be honest I thought David Hayter's voice over for Peace Walker was not good, it was overblown and comically haggard. With GZ Keith took a more subdued, restrained approach, that I think fits Snake's character better. But on the other hand, it would have been cool for all the mainline MGS games to use the same voice actor for Snake, for continuity's sake. I have no idea how many different voice actors Snake had for the Japanese versions, or other language versions for that matter. And yes somebody dies at the end of GZ. A character I never cared about, and what killed that character and how it did so, was amusing to me. But I'm just morbid like that.

Snake in Japanese has always been Batou's VA of GITS, Akio Otsuka. I think this is another reason why drama boiled up over the American changes at times. He was Snake in everything. But this is Kojima we're talking, he sucks on Hollywood's teet and I wonder if he was more obsessed with the English voice acting. I think him and Hayter maybe had some beef too at one point, Kojima not liking that Hayter was pretty popular as well. lol, how dare he go against Kojima's ego!
All that said... think I totally agree that Hayter was bad in Peace Walker. I think he may have literally damaged his vocal chords across MGS4 and that one lol. Chugged coffee before sessions and stuff. It worked for old man Solid Snake, but then not so much in Peace Walker. I actually still think MGS1 is my favorite Snake voice, when he sounded like a normal human being. lol
The open world of Phantom Pain... man oh man. It's like pseudo, fake, open world. lol, you'll see what I mean eventually. Nothing quite like it. It is still similar to Peace Walker in a way.

Yeah, it's only semi-open. I much prefer that, honestly.

I like for games that claim to be open world, to legitimately be open world. But I can roll with whatever, as long as it's fun.

I've beaten Nayuta: Endless Trails (PSP). Final time around 22h00, but it's more like 23h00 or something since there are times I goofed around and didn't save. Did all the side-quests, but not the post-game. I might at some point. A lot of times post-game stuff feels unnecessary and tiresome. But I have to see for myself.
It had been a long time since I'd played a truly great action RPG. Here the action is excellent - you've got fast, satisfying fighting, nice platforming, and exploration that is always rewarded in all kinds of ways. And I don't know if I ever enjoyed the boss battles as much in an action RPG. But that could also be because I wasn't much of an action gamer back when I played most of them. But I liked the slight puzzle aspect of them on top of the action. The character growth, mechanically, is great too, and very constant throughout. You're always getting a new spell, a new ability, a new sword move, some new equipment. The dungeons are broken down into shorter stages, but still feel like real dungeons on a smaller scale. As far as gameplay goes, it does everything right. As for the writing, it's not as great, but it's not bad at all. The story itself is decent. I liked the twist at the end regarding the villain, and in general, it never made me cringe like a lot of post-32 bit RPG stories do. A few unneeded clichéd lines here and there, but whatever. What elevates it is the way the town is written. Through their interactions and interpersonal relationships as events unfold, the NPCs end up feeling like actual side characters rather than just "Welcome to Fire Town, the town of fire!"-ass NPCs. I appreciated the town segments.
This might just be my favorite PSP game now. Top 3 is this, The 3rd Birthday and Undead Knights. I have no doubt that Ys Seven would probably be in there if I replayed it. But I'll have to play 8 and 9 first, too. One day. Anyway, this was a pleasure. ****+.
