Now that we're in June, we're about halfway through the present year (already!), so it's a good time to start discussing what Club Retro themes we all want next year. I want to be sure there's a wide variety to keep our continual involvement interesting.
Personally I think Club Retro themes should endeavor towards two specific goals: 1. To encourage participants to play yesteryear classics they missed.
2. To encourage participants to play games/genres that are outside their comfort zone, thus growing their appreciation of the medium en masse. Or at least offering the player an unusual experience compared to what they normally gravitate to.One idea I had for next year, was special birthday months. The concept being that the person who's birthday month it is, gets to solely pick the theme(s) for that month. (With the expectation that that selfsame person will participate in other folks' months.) If two people have the same birthday month, then the oldest person has seniority and claims that month. The other person takes the next open available month instead. Months still open afterwards can have their theme picked by the Club Retro community democratically. What do you guys think of this concept for next year? I fully agree with #1 and #2. I really do enjoy these monthly themes even though I've only been here a short time and I don't get to playing that much. As for the Birthdays, I like the idea, but I don't know if I could come up with something.
I don't know how this was done in the past, but in my mind we could list a bunch of ideas and then yea/nay or do a rating system. If you want to keep the idea of someone getting a choice, then they could "Gold Star" it and that could count as high points/it is going to happen.

I think we just threw out ideas, and there was a general consensus that we wanted to do a particular month. It's not as hard as you'd think to come up with stuff, especially if there's a game or genre you want to play or like.

I don't know how this was done in the past, but in my mind we could list a bunch of ideas and then yea/nay or do a rating system. This is exactly what we've done in the past. People throw out ideas, other people vote yay or nay on them, eventually a consensus is put together. It's not been particularly well organized as a poll before, but we also didn't have as many participants back then. Ultimately it's up to you guys how we narrow down next year's monthly themes. I just thought it'd be fun to let folks individually pick themes for their birthday month. I figure we'd still have a good six or seven months free after that for the usual voting method.

I dig the birthday picks idea, as long as we don't have a lot of overlap on a month or something. paulofthewest: Like the others said, it's a pretty lax system and we're just trying to have fun! I think we even changed a theme or two one year midway into it. Best to keep the discussions going so we don't have a throwaway theme at some point that nobody is really interested in. If you've got some fresh theme ideas yourself paul that would be cool to hear!

I'm pretty sure this is all a ploy so Ex can declare King's Field month on the month of his birth every year, but I like it anyway. It could lead to weird / interesting themes.

I'd do something worse.

I'd do something worse. Underwater games, right? Or whatever that genre is called. Thing is, I'd actually be down to try one if it happened to be on a console or support I own. One of my favorite parts of Breath of Fire was the whole underwater section where you suddenly get to play as the fish merchant. Likewise, exploring below the water was a highlight in Dragon Quest 6, as it was in Lufia 2. In fact, as a kid, when I thought I'd be making RPGs one day, I wanted to make a whole underwater RPG.

I take it this might be some of why you like FF3 a lot then. I loved the whole flooded world concept with the floating islands, the game had tremendous atmosphere especially for an NES game. And I recall you do go down to some underwater temple at some point or two. I'm surprised FF didn't really revisit this concept again later on (entirely flooded world with floating continents). Though I guess CT's Zeal kind of fits.

Xeogred Yeah, I remember when you make it to the world below, which you never knew existed, and find out it's entirely submerged in water. It was a powerful moment for me, and I do think that's when the game fully clicked for me. I like when RPGs really try to show you strange, unique worlds. I had a similar reaction in Super Hydlide when you reach a city in the clouds. FF3 really rewards exploration, too. There are tons of cool things to find in that game, and the fact that it's hard gives you the motivation to look for it.
