If those downports had one good thing going for them, the music was still pretty cool.

They're definitely not bad from a melodic standpoint - probably as well as you could do with that sound chip - but it misses so much without those thumping bass lines.

I still think they sound really nice for being 8-bit.

I forget if Yuzo Koshiro did the SMS/GG installments or not. Hmmm... There's a bit of a strange fuzzy melancholic sadness to those two platforms to me, in a cool way when the tunes are good. But I bet SoR on an NES would have had the appropriate amount of crunch and bass. Always kind of weird to remember that Koshiro only did about half of SoR3's OST along with Motohiro Kawashima, who assisted on SoR2. Honestly Kawashima's SoR3 tunes seem to mostly be the best ones to me actually, so it was maybe Koshiro that went hard on the experimentation and pushing the sound chip, for better or worse haha. vgmdb.net/album/358

Yeah, the NES could definitely do bass, just as a function of being clocked lower and able to achieve those frequencies. The Master System, for all that chip's limitations, probably could have done better if they had something to get those lower frequencies out of it.

There are definitely tunes that get stuck in your head from Comix Zone, and this is one of them. Definitely an iconic first level theme.

Funny thing is I was a fan of grunge as a kid, and I was a fan of Comix Zone... but I never realized the soundtrack was all grunge. I didn't pay much attention to games soundtrack until I started playing RPGs more, and I guess I didn't recognize the Genesis's version of guitar sounds for what they were meant to approximate. Definitely a memorable track, though. I can hear the "waaah!" voice clip as Sketch falls into that first panel as the level starts.

Turn it to 1.5x speed and now we're talking!

I really dug this track in Goemon 4 last night.

That's excellent. Nice little Eye of the Tiger shout-out around 34 seconds in, too.
