Well, the year is close to done, and I'm not sure whether I'll get the chance to finish another game with the Holidays coming up, so I might as well do this.
For 2019, I see a few broad categories in the gaming I want to do:
1. 2018 catch up. There's all the Data East stuff I didn't have time to play this December - Atomic Runner, especially. There's also Zillion 2, which I may not have time to play any more this year. If that's the case, I definitely want to get back to it soon.
2. RPGs. The Japanese kind. I've been playing fewer and fewer of them, with just a handful of SRPGs this year and no proper ARPG or turn-based RPG. I want to get back into them a bit. All three major styles: turn-based, action, and strategy. Not to the extent I used to, where that's all I played, but at least a few good ones.
3. I still have some Genesis and arcade action stuff I want to play. Shadow Dancer arcade, Shinobi 3, Twinkle Tale, Battle Mania 2, Dynamite Duke.
4. I'd like to finish a few harder shmups. The only two I've finished so far are considered easy. I'm thinking Wings of Wor, Hellfire, something like that.
5. Bonus: I'd like to play a few Playstation 2 games, maybe even PS3 (I'm supposed to get my hands on one soon). I'm especially interested in Yakuza 3, which is where I'm at in the series. I've almost run out of new beat-'em-ups to play, and those brawler battles would feel great right about now. Onimusha, too.

- Play Shadow Hearts Covenant - Play more PS2/Xbox backlog - Beat a Parasite Eve* - Beat a Dino Crisis* (it is weird that I'm a fan of both and their genres, but still have never fully beaten these) - Beat Vagrant Story - Play Tron Bonne - Give the Genesis more love - Play Sigil and 50 more hours of Doom megawads

Solid objectives. The OG Parasite Eve is maybe 15 hours long, and has a great atmosphere. Vagrant Story is great, and has a similar (but more refined) battle system, though otherwise it's completely different. The Genesis is great, of course. Tron Bonne... it's a miss for me, but you're a big Mega Man fan, so it makes sense for you. Maybe I should try Dino Crisis again, myself. I like that early Resident Evil framework.

I've played enough of Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve 1-2, and Dino Crisis 1-2, all enough to pretty much have my full opinions set on them. But yeah I hate unfinished business and it feels weird I haven't completed these. Vagrant Story blows Parasite Eve 1 out of the water to me gameplay wise and might be why PE1 kind of bored me, haha. It's super JRPG Lite in comparison. But I love PE1's atmosphere and music. Some people out there might think it's humorous I've beaten obscure RE clones like Hard Edge/TRAG and Galerians, but still not Capcom's own Dino Crisis games. I'd like to beat at least one Parasite Eve and Dino Crisis but could maybe do all four games. My PSX backlog is pretty thin now. I've got some other games downloaded I want to sample here and there.
Yeah I absolutely love Mega Man Legends and beat both last year, so Tron Bonne should be up my alley. I know it's more minigame based and different but I think I'll still dig it a lot.
For the Genesis, these I've sampled but need to play more of: - Alisia Dragoon - Gaiares - Gunstar Heroes - McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure - Raiden Densetsu~ Raiden Trad
These I haven't played at all yet: - Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer - Crusader of Centy - Dynamite Headdy (J) - Gynoug - High Seas Havoc - Jewel Master - Landstalker - Pulseman - Ranger X - Rocket Knight Adventures - Second Damurai - Two Crude Dudes - Wings of War

Yeah, Parasite Eve is not a game you play for its gameplay, which is just ok, but for its atmosphere and, to a certain extent, story.
Most of that Genesis stuff you listed is good, some of it is great.
I think Second Samurai is just as trash as The First Samurai, but apparently it's some sort of Amiga classic, so if you have a taste for those, you might like it.
Alisia Dragoon is a beautiful game that I've never been able to understand on a fundamental gameplay level. I suspect it might just not be very well-designed, but I'm not closed to the possibility that I'm just not getting it, cause I have the same problem with that Psychic Taromaru whatever game.
Some people get overwhelmed by Gunstar Heroes, but it's a game you have to take in as a sensory experience, just playing it as hyper as you can get, for it to make sense. You can really give it all your energy, and it will respond in kind.
Wings of Wor is really good, though I haven't made it far in it yet. It's one of the early, proto-bullet hells, with a great atmosphere. It's like a dark take on Actraiser, if it were a shmup. Also, Gynoug is the same game.
Rocket Knight Adventures if Konami at its most showy, overflowing-with-ideas self. It's designed as a series of setpieces rather than traditional levels, so there's a new gameplay gimmick kicking in every 3 minutes. You're either going to love it or find it exhausting.
Love Jewel Master. It's more old-fashioned than its 1991 release date might suggest, but it's also pretty different from other games in the genre. Restarting the level when you lose to a boss might seem overly harsh at first, and I'm not a fan of that design choice usually, but most of them aren't really hard to figure out, so it doesn't happen all that much. You do have to put some thought into the weapons system, though. BTW, there's a hint in the manual about the weapon you need to beat the final boss.
McDonald's is one of those weird licensed games that should have been garbage but ended up surprisingly decent because the developer refused not to care.

- Beat Vagrant Story - Play Tron Bonne - Jewel Master - Landstalker I recommend those the most strongly. I've just been making a list of games I want to try next year. Some are HRG compliant. Some aren't. I may not play them all. But a list to jump start picks will be useful. So far I've got... Actraiser II Ankoku Shinwa / The Dark Myth Arc the Lad 2 Bahamut Lagoon Dark Souls Dead Space Digital Devil Saga I & II DOOM 64 EX Dragon Quest VI Elemental Master Fallout 3: New Vegas Final Fantasy VIII Kenseiden Jeanne d'Arc Jewel Master Legendary Axe Live a Live Mass Effect 3 Metal Gear Solid 4 Rogue Galaxy Shining Force 2 Power Dolls The Skycrawlers Valkyria Chronicles III Ys II Ys Celceta Ys VIIIEdit: Some of those I've tried before. In that case the idea is to beat the game.

I've talked a bit about several of those games, but given that I just got ActRaiser 2, it's the one that's on my mind. I think you're either going to eventually fall in love with that game, or absolutely detest it. I have mad respect for the game, but it requires some very exacting play. Bosses can be extremely difficult to beat without either very precise movements or some absolute magic spam, which brings challenges of its own given how long it takes to charge. Thankfully, unlike a game like Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, you get passwords and can continue once you beat the (very hard, often cheap) stages.
You'll absolutely notice the gorgeous graphics, though. Even if you have to save state your way through (and I did the first time), just seeing the artistry on hand makes it worthwhile.

Aside from the many SRPG games I have already mentioned, I'm also planning to play 12 first person games in 2019. While there are some first person games from 2009 I am quite interested in - and I'm mainly thinking of: Borderlands Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain MoonNecroVision STALKER: Call of Pripyat The PrecursorsTwin Sector Wolfenstein
There are just as many classics/older games I still haven't played or completed that I believe might be worth playing: 007 shooters Anvil of Dawn Arx Fatalis Blake Stone Blood Deep Labyrinth DOOM (PS1) Halo 2 Realms of the HauntingRed Faction 1 & 2 Serious Sam games Star Trek: Elite Forces 1 & 2 System Shock 1 & 2 Stonekeep The Elder Scrolls: Arena & DaggerfallTurok games Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 Unreal 1 & 2 Vietcong games Witchaven games Xenus games I underlined the games I'm particularly interested in. I haven't forgotten the Metroid Prime trilogy, but my current PC is too wack to emulate them. I'm also fairly interested in Red Steel, but emulation for it probably isn't an option since you need a Wiimote. In any case, chances are I'll cherry-pick each of these 12 games and I won't just play random stuff garbage. I solemnly promise I won't play bad games from Eastern Europe. Arc the Lad 2 Bahamut Lagoon Jeanne d'Arc I'm probably going to play these games myself, so that's going to be interesting. I'm also looking forward to your thoughts on Dead Space, DOOM 64 EX and the Digital Devil Saga games. Vagrant Story blows Parasite Eve 1 out of the water to me gameplay wise and might be why PE1 kind of bored me, haha. The gameplay, story and atmosphere blow Parasite Eve out of the water and that's coming from someone who never finished Vagrant Story because I suck at rhythm-based combat. I intend to eventually go back to it, grit my teeth and finish it regardless because I can tell Vagrant Story is worth it.
