Same here. If anything it's more of a challenge for me to participate in group or monthly events, because if my mood isn't into the idea I'm not forcing it. I have a pretty random flow of gaming moods, usually only playing 1-3 at a time but I never really know what comes next when I beat something. October and Horror has almost become a joke in my own head, I always get excited thinking of what horror games I want to play or replay but usually end up doing that all another month haha.
The goals are fun but nothing I take too seriously or beat myself over. I don't see it here but I know around other forums some people take it all a bit too far.

I do find the Club Retro stuff to be useful, since it gives me an extra prod to play games that I have been interested in, but somehow slipped off my radar. And by somehow, I mean there are so many games that I still want to play that I can't keep them all straight regardless.

I don't know how it's going to turn out this year, but in 2018 my original idea was to focus on shooters from the 90s, then I extended it to games from the 00s (no newer than 2008 obviously) and then it became any first person game as long as it features free movement, lets you play as a person (no vehicle) and actions/combat occur in real-time. I believe with SRPGs there probably won't be any need to loosen the requirements, considering they usually take longer to beat and there are tons of them I still haven't played.
I'll try to partecipate in the monthly events whenever they fit my own gaming objectives, but I also like to focus on one series at a time and see how they evolved over the years - and that usually takes a long time, as some of these series span over decades.
Other than that, I don't know whether I'll follow similar yearly themes in the future. ARPGs and Survival Horror (RE-like) games actually were also valid candidates, but I'm not quite as dedicated to those genres. Adventure games would be cool, but I know already that getting stuck on a puzzle every two seconds would really make for a frustrating gaming year. FPDCs were another alternative, but I can't tell whether I'd like them enough to stick with the genre for a whole year. Same with JRPGs.

I'll try to partecipate in the monthly events whenever they fit my own gaming objectivesNo offense, but I think that's doing it wrong. The idea of Club Retro is to get us to play stuff we normally wouldn't. Which helps one become a better experienced, more informed gamer as a result. For example; before this month's Club Retro, I had practically zero interest in 1st & 2nd generation video games. Now after having done a lot of research into that era - due to this month's club retro theme - I have come across dozens of obscure games that I'd like to beat someday. I've had a lot of fun trying out all kinds of esoteric platforms I never would have touched otherwise; discovering long forgotten gems. This has increased my knowledge of a particular era of gaming, and my appreciation of it as a result. This same phenomena can carry over to a great many other potential themes with Club Retro. I encourage all of our members to embark on each month's theme, and discuss your experiences. Even if you only play one game for each. You've got nothing to lose and plenty to gain. Edit: We could always do a FPDC month!

True. I must admit the one we did at RB was fun. It got me to play both King's Field IV and Orcs & Elves, and I had a fun time with both.

So, I also tend to let the monthly themed events also follow the monthly themed events more closely when they line up with my "gaming objectives" but that's because I basically only have one gaming objective and that's to play through the games that I physically own but I haven't played through, or in most cases even touched, yet. This invariably lands me somewhere halfway between what Ex hopes we're getting out of a Monthly challenge because I still feel stretched and engaged in an act of discovery, but also I get to feel a little self-serving about the affair too.

Well if you and @tsumuri are down for a FPDC month this year, we've also go my vote. I love the genre. Let's see if anyone else agrees? We could do it in April or May perhaps? I basically only have one gaming objective and that's to play through the games that I physically own but I haven't played through, or in most cases even touched, yet. That is an admirable, and understandable, gaming objective. If we're all playing at least one game for each Club Retro theme; that is what my personal hope is. I think all of us can manage to do that, even if it requires emulation. Club Retro also works as a community event where we are commonly engaged in a unified effort. That idea is good for the forum spirit methinks.

I'm up for it (FPDC month). It's a deal then, I'll schedule the theme into April. Maybe this will be the impetus I need to finally finish Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land.

I could use that month to dive back into Lands of Lore. I was playing it on tablet, and got a decent ways in. I should probably consider copying it over to my new tablet, though. Smaller screen, but it actually stays agreeable these days unlike my old Tegra 3-based one.
