Yeah, that's understandable. Everyone has different tastes. The NES just happens to have a lot of platformers in the style that appeals to me, so it really is my ideal system in a lot of ways. I also forgot to mention that list doesn't even include PAL releases or Japanese games. Just the official US releases. (Also, it's Kabuki Quantum Fighter, and it made my list, because of course it did.)

Hope this isn't too off topic, but since a lot of Master System games crossed over with Game Gear and vice versa, has anyone here played Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble on the GG? Ironically enough HCG101 has a bunch of recent Sonic articles up covering the Master System games, Sonic Chaos which Ex liked a lot here in this thread (the HCG101 author didn't seem to praise it as much, but I bet I like Sonic way more than them so I'll really dig Chaos). Triple Trouble is one I always seem to hear about, so maybe it's up there with Chaos among the best 8bit Sonic's. www.hardcoregaming101.net/sonic-the-hedgehog-triple-trouble/Interesting to note, apparently Sonic Blast was only officially released on the Game Gear originally, which has better colors. But the Master System is still popular in Brazil and they ported it to the SMS, along with that weird Duke Nukem 3D port, and other weirdness. Uhhh I dunno, but if I check this one out maybe I'll go for the Game Gear version if that was the original.
I wish Knuckles Chaotix didn't have that lame grapple chain gimmick. Visually it looks awesome and I wish I could play through it, but it's torture to play.

Like, what's everyone's "second favorite" SMS game? Fantasy Zone II. It's an amazing 8-bit shmup. A colorful wonderland that couldn't have been made on NES. Beyond that, my third favorite is the original Zillion. It is a hardcore and awesome exploratory platformer. 99.5% of people don't give Zillion an honest chance; never truly sink into its experience. It's a grower yes, but it's worth the effort. Thirdly the original Alex Kidd in Miracle World is fantastic, except for its bullshit boss battles. The game is super creative with lots of variety to its game design. I didn't talk about some of my favorite SMS games in this thread, because I'm saving them for White Whales month. I owned about twenty five games on SMS when I was a kid, but I only managed to beat five or six of them. There were quite a few I got to the final stage or final boss of, but couldn't quite pull it off. Granted I was in grade school at the time. has anyone here played Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble on the GG I'm saving it for our Game Gear month whenever that happens. I think people try to conflate it too strongly against its 16-bit contemporaries. Like yeah, it's not as good as the 16-bit incarnations. Of course it isn't. But for an 8-bit experience? Very impressive technically, and pure breezy fun to play. I don't know if it'd been possible to make a better 8-bit Sonic experience than what SMS Chaos pulled off. Guess we'll see with Triple Trouble. It also doesn't help that I'm not a massive fan, with my opinion of the Genesis games topping out at around an 8/10.

For what it's worth, both the author of the hg101 articles on all the 8-bit Sonic games and the few forum posters who commented either dislike or flat-out hate Sonic Chaos, and appreciate Sonic 1 & 2 Master System more than Ex does. And Triple Trouble does seems to be everyone's favorite. I'm gonna try it too for GG month.

Conflicting opinions like that get me even more curious!

Ex : Hey, now, 8/10 is still "great" in my rating vernacular! (The other kicker is that I seem to like all of them about equally, although I think there are aspects of the first game I like most of all. It's not afraid to slow things down at points, and I appreciate that a lot.)

toeiI often find myself at odds to the opinions of many HG101 articles. Conflicting opinions like that get me even more curious! I'm very interested to see what you would think of Sonic Chaos on the Master System - doubly so as you're a fan of the first two Sonic games on the SMS. SargeOf the Genesis mainline Sonic games, I'd rate the first three 9/10, and Knuckles an 8/10. High quality platformers all around. Personally I like Sonic gameplay best when you're zipping along. Gotta go fast!

That's fair, actually. I mean, I absolutely know why Sonic has his fans; those games were no joke! Too bad Sega spent so much time putting out terrible games in the intervening years, and it's no wonder that Sonic Mania found such a positive reception. I'm actually surprised that they didn't lean in harder to the Genesis-style outings after the success Nintendo had with the "New" series. Actually, you know what was a great Sonic game? Sonic Pocket Adventure. I played the mess out of that game, and I tend to forget it when Sonic comes up. I also think the GBA games are quite good. I am currently debating whether I want to submit myself to torture and play Golden Axe Warrior now. I could be the local contrarian!

I am currently debating whether I want to submit myself to torture and play Golden Axe Warrior now. I could be the local contrarian! If you want to play devil's advocate for that game... well, good luck man. --- I played a bunch of random Master System games tonight, but the only one I played long enough to beat was... 17. Virtua Fighter Animation | Master System | 1997"Virtua Fighter Animation" is a 1997 Master System fighting game, developed by Aspect, and published by Tec Toy in South America. The Master System version is actually a port of the 1996 Game Gear release of the same name. The Game Gear original was published by SEGA in Japan, Europe, and the USA. Unlike the core games of this series, "Virtua Fighter Animation" does not utilize polygons. Rather the characters are animated sprites against static backgrounds. "Animation" also has a strong plot driving the single player experience. In the story mode, the player follows the anime's plot, with anime style cutscenes before and after each fight. The story is divided in acts, each one of them corresponding to one fight. The player starts controlling Akira Yuki, as he beats his opponents, each one of them joins his party, so they can be chosen in the next fights. Besides Akira, the other characters which become available are Pai Chan, Jacky Bryant, Wolf Hawkfield, Kage-Maru, Sarah Bryant and Lau Chan. In the final act, the player must fight against Dural. The combat is simple stuff. It's classic 1 VS 1 2D fighting. There's a punch button, kick button, and to jump the player presses up. This limited move set limits the complexity of combat, but the fighting still feels good. Punches and kicks connect with power, sending opponents reeling. The player has to beat their opponent twice to win a match. This can be done by draining their opponent's life bar, or by knock their opponent out of the ring. Between each match, animated cutscenes are shown that progress the plot's narrative. +Well drawn cutscenes portray an amusing plot.
+Sprites are actually "animated" well.
+Combat engine is responsive for its platform. +Narrative has a fun sense of humor.
+Music tracks aren't bad.
-Way too easy overall.
-The SMS version isn't graphically improved over the GG one.
-AI is very prone to being cheesed.
-Backgrounds need some animation.
-Super short game. Ex's time to beat: 20 minutes Ex's rating: 6/10
- Well that's 9 SMS games beaten so far. I'm still gonna go for an even ten. Just not sure what the last one will be.

Virtua Fighter Animation is at least a 7.5 for me. It's miles ahead of most 8-bit fighters in terms of feel. Of course, just doing a single run through the arcade mode doesn't do any VS fighter justice. There are more moves from the mainline series than you might think, btw. It's not just punching and kicking.
