Neutopia does have some really good songs. Only problem is how short the loops are. Neutopia 2 does add actual towns, though, and I think it had some new weapons.

Yeah forgot about the towns. Obviously they didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Any Crusader of Centy fans up in here? How's it compare to actual Zelda.

Any Crusader of Centy fans up in here? How's it compare to actual Zelda. It's not really a Zelda clone, not in the way Golden Axe Warrior or Neutopia are. It's much more of a real action RPG, with story and towns, gameplay is faster-paced and throws in a bit of platforming flavor. Neither the overworld or dungeon's are built like Zelda's. It's a really good game.

I played a good amount of it, but not as much as my brother. It's really solid, although not as good as LttP, as you might guess. You get a cool sword-tossing ability, though, and animal helpers (which actually factors into the plot). But yeah, as toei says, while it might look like a clone from a distance, it really does have its own flavor. My favorite ARPG on Genesis is Beyond Oasis. Killer stuff there.

Well I guess I need to get around to Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis sometime soon. I think we need to have another action-RPG thread. I'm sure there's plenty of gems I've missed at least.

I wish there were more on Genesis, honestly. The system got overlooked in a lot of ways on the RPG front, but a lot that it did get were really solid. Landstalker is still on my list, and might be another candidate for a white whale game. I really should start making a list...

The Genesis actually has a fair deal of action RPGs. Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy, Landstalker, Light Crusader, Super Hydlide, Ys III, King Colossus... Sword of Vermillion and Rent-A-Hero are technically action, though I tend not to count games with random encounters that take place on a separate screen (like the Tales series) - those are really closer to turn-based RPGs in every other way.
High quality average, too. Of course more would have been great. There was actually supposed to be a Ys IV on Genesis, which was cancelled during development. It would've been great if it had turned out as different from the other two as they were to each other.
I should replay Beyond and Legend of Oasis, especially. I owned it at the time and played it a lot, but I probably haven't touched it since the '90s.

Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy, Landstalker, Light Crusader, Super Hydlide, Ys III, King Colossus, Sword of Vermillion, Rent-A-Hero I've beaten the bolded, and enjoyed all of them. I don't see many (any) Sword of Vermillion fans on gaming forums. Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only person who actually enjoyed that game. I've got some great memories of playing through it when I was 12 while stuck wheelchair-bound in a partial bodycast. It's such a moody, atmospheric experience... with terrifying bosses. Or at least, they were terrifying when I was a kid.

Yeah, it's more than you'd think, just less than I'd like.
