Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis didn't set my world on fire. I can't even recall finishing the latter. I'd rank them below even noted Super Famicom clunkers like Xak, Brandish, and Lagoon.
It's been years though. They'll come back into my rotation eventually.

You have very different tastes in gaming, though, bonesnapdeez . Anyway, two more dungeons down. It's starting to get tricky up in here. I'm not ashamed to use a few save states from time to time to save constant traipsing through the dungeons. Speaking of which... ...the combat is now even more fiddly. Oh, joy! I got the speed shoes, which up your movement speed considerably. This simultaneously makes it easier to escape and harder to be precise with your attacks. I also figured out the real problem with at least the sword combat: If you're a half-step above or even with an enemy when facing left/right, you can hit them. Half-step below? Whiff. Same problem with up-down, although that's more keyed into the hand you wield your blade in. At any rate, it sucks. Plus, there are no infinite-use items like the boomerang to help stun enemies and keep them manageable, and enemies also have very small amounts of knockback, which means sometimes you've got to hit and run. I think 20thcenturygamer's writeup captures some of my frustration well. And frustrated I am, because this is so close to being a legitimately great game. But the flaws drag it waaaaay down into the muck. It's equal parts fascinating and infuriating.

It's equal parts fascinating and infuriating. Turn back now, before Stockholm syndrome fully sets in.

It's been years though. They'll come back into my rotation eventually. That's wild. Both of them are in the upper tier of 16-bit RPGs (and so is Landstalker). I'd argue that Beyond Oasis has some of the best, if not the best, action of any action RPG of the era. Xak is bad (on the SFC), Lagoon is extremely hard to play due to having the shortest sword in video game history (I actually played it again a bit while I was playing Xak and I don't know how I was ever able to get into it), and Brandish is actually very solid, and not a clunker at all. Sarge I'll contradict Ex - you're probably quite far into the game at this point, so you might as well finish it. And I agree with you, it didn't need much to be a much better game. Just more polished fighting. It was probably rushed, though. A lot of Master System games have that extra bit of roughness that comes from overly tight deadlines, but it's not always as much of an issue.

Oh, I'm on a quest to finish this puppy now. Too much time invested. I can't see myself ever playing through it again, unless there's some hacking work done to make it not so aggravating. Wonder if I couldn't figure out how to expand the hit boxes a bit?

I really couldn't get into Beyond Oasis, even though it looks and controls real nicely. I think I wish the camera were a bit more zoomed out. I've been at this conclusion for ages but I'm usually a fan of smaller sprites and bigger environments when it comes to classic pixel art design. Link is pretty dang small in most of the overhead Zelda's and I prefer it like that.

Beyond Oasis is much more physical than Zelda, so it needed decent-sized sprites to properly show the protagonist's movements. Something like Link's stubby little sprite would never have worked. I'm the opposite in terms of tastes; I think big juicy Neo Geo sprites is the greatest form of 2D graphics, and I haaaaate the miniature sprite / giant empty environments combo you see in a lot of modern indie games (something like A Link to the Past is still okay, though). Legend of Oasis had really great animations:
Do you like Terranigma? It's probably the closest thing to Beyond in terms of sprite size and zoom-in on the SNES, though they still have big anime heads.

I do think the spacing can suffer from giant sprites, but I think the combat has a visceral feel in Beyond Oasis that definitely changes things up from most action-RPGs. It's practically a beat-'em-up RPG. I like how Beyond feels better than Legend of Oasis, which I still want to beat. Another white whale...

For me the best overhead action-RPGs I've played in recent years were these: Both of those were an absolute blast. Hey now that's its 2019, I can finally post a trailer for the PSP version: And somebody made a goofy ass trailer for the SFC sequel: Seriously great games through. They're like Zelda for grown ups!
Oh I forgot, this is an SMS thread... uh, here guys:
THE CHALLENGE WILL ALWAYS BE THERE.

Yes! Dark Revenant will always be one of my favorites, and I'm glad Ex pushed me to play it.
