I thought you weren't generally a fan, though? Or do you just sort of stay in the loop but don't trust them very much? I stay in the loop and archive retro indie titles that look interesting for future play. I've actively played and enjoyed a few of them in the past. I also like to submit candidates to this thread because I think this thread deserves the effort.

It's worth posting about interesting stuff for sure. I should do a better job of it myself. I saw one that looked interesting, but I've already forgotten the title... ...oh, wait, here it is. Not sure it's going to be my speed, but it does look quite nice.

toei: Funny enough I often wonder if I, probably the most "modern" gamer on HRG, am also the pickiest about the retro-throwbacks. I'm glad Ex and others post some updates in this thread but I can honestly say these games very rarely impress or interest me, lol. I also always have the thought, there's probably an actual retro game like this that I should play instead.
Off the top of my head, how I'd rank some stuff I've played so far:
Top Tier: - Shovel Knight
- Blazing Chrome - Axiom Verge
- Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - Bloodstained (both Curse and Ritual) - does this even count though? Since it's literally Igavania with him attached and all!
- Ion Fury - Dusk
Good: - Odallus - Shantae stuff - Hyper Light Drifter
That's kind of it. Looking over my Steam list I see a few more but nothing I'd really go out of my way to recommend.
There was a lot of stuff in the Xbox Live era last gen that people went crazy for and I played, but didn't like them much... Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim, Bastion, etc. And I hated Cave Story.

I finally started buying Steam games after I got Streets of Rage IV, but it'll never stop being disappointing to me that all those retro indie games are always such blatant rip-offs of classic games. I can't understand why someone would want to do that instead of something that's at least a little bit creative. The best you can hope for when you aim that low is to be "almost as good as". Games like Shovel Knight, which are somewhat original, retro-styled, and high quality all at the same time, are unfortunately very uncommon.

I agree with most of your rankings, although I haven't played enough Blazing Chrome to decide it it's just good or top tier. Other stuff I'd throw out there as being excellent, and I'm sure I've mentioned them before:
Hollow Knight The Messenger Castle in the Darkness Elliot Quest Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King Freedom Planet Valdis Story Escape Goat 1/2 1001 Spikes Super Cyborg Environmental Station Alpha Pharaoh Rebirth+ Rex Rocket The Mummy Demastered Iconoclasts Guacamelee Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack! Retro City Rampage Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus Fez Blaster Master Zero 1/2 Strider (2014) Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom River City Girls
I know that's a lot! But I've had at least a good time or even better with all these games.

If you're new to using Steam, my tip would be to just wait for the huge sales to get games like this stuff. Usually around the seasonal holidays, you can get these games for dollars a pop.
I liked how Shovel Knight felt like a love letter to everything NES in general (definitely pulls from Mega Man, Zelda II, Castlevania, SMB3, etc) and still had its own personality.

I'm surprised you didn't seem into Blazing Chrome nearly as much as I was and if you consider Super Cyborg better or even equal, man... I'll be speechless.
I bolded the ones on your list that interest me. I forgot about Blaster Master Zero 2, the first one was great stuff so I'm excited to play 2 sometime.

Because the demographic the lazy devs are targeting, are often blissfully ignorant of the original game that's being cloned.

It's a mixture of those people and the "I haven't played (X) in 25 years!" people, largely. A lot of reviews you find on Steam are very uncritical due to those two things - lack of experience or only vague memories of the games being aped.

Steam reviews... I wouldn't waste your time on those much.

I feel like we'd probably be better judges of what works and what doesn't, given that we never stopped playing retro games. I'm actually surprised, though, that I've played so many retro-styled games compared to folks here, unless y'all are just holding out on me.
