I feel like we'd probably be better judges of what works and what doesn't, given that we never stopped playing retro games. I'm actually surprised, though, that I've played so many retro-styled games compared to folks here, unless y'all are just holding out on me. I played a whole bunch years back, but they don't really interest me anymore. The aesthetic has all changed. All those indie games have the exact same art style, and it has never looked good. Last Faith, Risk of Rain, Crawl, etc. Or the sprites look like blobs. 2010s pixel art is not really an homage to the old days. They're their own look. Not to mention their own feel.

Hmm, I think it's like I mentioned, I will often think there's probably actual old games I should be playing instead. Or if X-New game is trying to be a homage to A-Old game, I think I should play the old one first haha. It's admittedly maybe a weird personal road block. But I'm also very picky about this stuff anyways. Also, there might be a chance I play a few more genres than you do? It doesn't surprise me you've played a lot of this neo-retro stuff, but a lot of them definitely look like in your normal wheel house too in a way. Maybe that makes even more sense for you though, seems like you've played most of the old action/platformers and you still need more, so you hit up all these throwbacks too.

Yep, that's a pretty solid assessment, now that you mention it. New material for me is good. I'm mostly in deep dive territory for the genres I most enjoy.
I will say, though, that I'm pretty picky about them as well. I don't just play any game that screams "retro!" at me - I know what's good and what ain't, at least for my tastes. A lot of retro-styled games indeed aren't that good.

Just so y'all know, apparently Limited Run is doing a printing of both Blaster Master Zero and its sequel. Too bad they're not both on one cart/disc, but some might want 'em. It'd be an instant purchase if they were combined, but $60 total might just be too much for my blood. Xeogred : I meant to speak to your Contra statement, but forgot to hit on it. I don't know how I feel about Blazing Chrome yet, other than I liked it. I'm not sure yet if it's going to be one of those evergreen titles for me, though, and a lot of that comes down to which Contra games I prefer. I like the 16-bit games, but I much prefer the NES Contra games, and it's part of the reason Super Cyborg appealed to me. Now, to this point, that title also hasn't been an evergreen title, because the endgame was so stressful that I don't relish trying to tackle it again. The fact that it does level checkpointing means the individual levels can be calibrated much harder, and that's absolutely what they did.

I think I lean more towards the 16bit era's for both Contra and Castlevania. Though I'd take the 8bit Contra's over the 8bit Castlevania's too, didn't really have any issues with them and I'm not always in the mood for how insane Hard Corps and Contra 3 are. The NES ones being a bit simpler is more approachable.
Blazing Chrome seemed like a bit of a midpoint between those two eras of Contra for me. It definitely felt like there was some Mega Man X in there too (the Ride Armor's even haha).

Now those get a thumbs up from me. Looks promising.
I'm hoping that if Capcom eventually revives Mega Man X, they'll stick to sprites. But I wonder if large publishers still have a stigma against the style? It's felt like that a bit in recent years sometimes, like publishers probably think it looks cheap or doesn't sell as well. I also used to fear that the talent for the art style was just simply being lost over time, but the indie scene kind of says otherwise. If publishers wanted to bring back that flavor, there has to be hundreds of young talent out there nowadays that can do it.
This is probably what would get my attention regarding Street Fighter as well. Bring back the Alpha art style, or something in the vein of what Arc System Works pulls off thesedays. Dragon Ball FighterZ and modern Guilty Gear/Blaz Blue games look freaking striking and awesome.

I agree, those two side-scrollers look legit at first glance.

Very nice, indeed. First one looks a little like a melee Contra? Pretty sweet. The second I think looks like the Gunvolt games. And I heard that music and thought, "Man, gotta be Sakuraba." Which, of course, was confirmed later in the video.
