Spoilers: IT'S EVEN BETTER! Better than Bloodstained (I can believe it), or better than Quake Dissolution of Eternity (unlikely!)? lol

I bought a game called Katana Soul on Steam for like 60 cents. The conceit is that it's just like a Commodore 64 sidescroller, and you even see a C64 boot screen when you start it up. That's a bit weird to me, because the game it seems most inspired by is Kenseiden on the Master System (I know there's The First Samurai, but that's not what this game feels or look like). Of course it also features a samurai battling supernatural forces, but it also feels a little too good to hit enemies for an old European computer game.* The walking speed is really slow, though, slower than what you'd have seen in any decent Master System or NES game, and you're only given four lives and no continues on the easier of two modes (I did find one extra life so far), which seems a bit too harsh. Of course it tries to sell itself on being hard and unforgiving "like those old games", and maybe that would've been normal then. It does look somewhat like a C64 game, I guess, and it definitely sounds like one, which is a good thing as the C64 produced some really badass music. There's some nicely atmospheric stuff here, especially when going through the cemetery. There's a nice attention to details, with things like rain starting right after you cross a bridge (very Ghouls 'N Ghost), or the ways each stage leads into the next coherently. There are also little story events along the way - usually just someone who runs up to you and briefly asks you to help them or avenge someone (kind of like Golden Axe starts). It's supposed to only be about half an hour long, though you're not expected to beat it in one go. I think I've made it pretty far, so I might give it a few more attempts later. It's not a bad game, but I really do wish you'd walk faster. And did I mention Kenseiden? I like Kenseiden better.
-I watched the video and I was literally 3 or 4 screens from the end. Now I know I have to go back and finish it later.

I beat Katana Soul. It's a decent little game, I'd give a 6 out 10. There's a few design quirks I don't like, and it's a bit short even by the standards of the day, but I like that it really does feel like an 8-bit game, not somebody's nostalgic idea of it, and that the type of 8-bit game it chooses to emulate is not the NES. I believe the guy who made it is Italian; he's definitely European, in any case. So that explains why the influence is more old computers/Master System. The sword is really responsive and feels nice to use. I like that you can sometimes deflect things with it, and cut enemies in half. It's a decent little thing. Nice atmosphere too. Like a mix of Kenseiden, Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the dramatic weather effects, and Splatterhouse since the story is about an evil mask. I've said it before, but it's weird how easy the bosses are, though, even the first time around. But with just 4 lives, it would've been really annoying otherwise. I'll give the harder mode a shot later to see if I can beat it.
