Something I've been looking for online, but have not been able to find, is a (more or less) concise collection of retro side-scrolling action-RPGs. I'm talking about the platformer styled ones. I think it'd be awesome to have a reference for people to refer to, so they can find new ones to play. I'm hoping we can use this thread to create such a useful tome. So if people want to reply with suggestions, I will continuously edit this OP to add in entries. It may take a while, but eventually we should have a really useful resource here. I'll start with five entries myself. I'll add new platforms in the list as they are required.

I assume this means there has to be a leveling system of some kind? Or can it just be some form of permanent player empowerment similar to Metroid games? If the latter, Demon's Crest totally counts. (I just want an excuse to bring that game up, honestly.)
I think Simon's Quest counts, though. You get more powerful by collecting hearts, so it's definitely a leveling system.
There are a few Famicom games that come to mind immediately, like Cosmo Police Galivan and Bio Senshi Dan (aka Bashi Bazook: Morphoid Masher). And while it has a mixed perspective with some overhead sections, Rygar on NES also likely counts.

Oh man I could list like 100083743783 billion if I didn't have two babbies sitting on me.
Off the top of my head, most Dragon Slayer games qualify. Xanadu, Romancia, Legacy of the Wizard, Sorcerian, and both Legend of Xanadu titles. Multiple platforms. The XZR (Exile) trilogy. Gensou Tairiku Auleria (PCE CD). Jikuu Yuten: Debias (Famicom)
Many, many more. This can be a tricky list given how rudimentary some of the "leveling" systems are in these games. Hard to tell what's a true ARPG and what's "just" a Metroidvania.

I assume this means there has to be a leveling system of some kind? That's the one factor I always attribute to something being an "RPG". So yeah, leveling for sure. We could make a retro metroidvania compendium be its own thread later on. I'll add your suggestions! I'll add 'em!

I just finished one, come to think of it. Cadash counts, even if it's pretty simple structurally. Arcade, TG-16, and Genesis versions.
If leveling is involved, then... I guess all the Igavanias count? Figure so, even if they're also under the Metroidvania rubric.
Maybe Odin Sphere, it just squeezes in under the ten-year bar.
Games like Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap/Curse) get close, but no leveling, so it's more Metroidvania. But they are awfully close in construction barring that fact.
Oh, I just realized, does Battle of Olympus even have a leveling system? I'm not sure it does. It does have a monetary system like the Monster World games, so I suspect if Olympus counts, the MW games need to as well.

does Battle of Olympus even have a leveling system? Now that I think of it, no, I don't think it does! Oops. Off it goes. I don't know about Odin Sphere. Does it actually have any platforming? I'll add your others. Eventually I'll have to go back and list multi-platform games under each platform they occur on. Not today though!

Well, you can jump, anyway. I think there might be a few cliff faces you have to climb, but the platforming is extremely rudimentary. I'd probably leave it off, in retrospect. It's more side-scrolling brawler-RPG than what we're looking for. I'd still consider leaving Olympus in, personally. It just feels like it belongs, if that makes any sense. In a lot of ways, games with equipment upgrades where you have to purchase them is practically like leveling, it's just abstracted to that single money stat instead of an experience and money pool. Now that I think about it, Bio Senshi Dan may not have an explicit leveling system either. I know your health pool increases, but that may simply be based on defeating the main boss of an area or progressing to the next stage.

Yeah I'm looking to create a list of side-scrolling action-RPGs with distinct leveling systems, that also incorporate platforming elements. I know there are quite a few of them, just a matter of sussing them out. Olympus and Bio Senshi Dan can go into a later metroidvania compendium, as I believe they have that style of recursive gameplay. When I have more free time, I'll start plucking the recesses of the net for more entries in this thread's list. Otherwise, keep bringing the suggestions folks!

Just thought of one: Rambo on NES. For reals.
Strider gets close. You gain levels, but it's not from an experience meter, but on killing certain bosses, gaining certain items, or various plot points. To some degree Bionic Commando has some ARPG stylings as well, with a rudimentary EXP system with the life gauge.

What about hybrid side-scrolling RPGs, like Exile 1 & 2, or Holy Umbrella on the Super Famicom? Both have top-down towns similar to most RPGs, but switch to a side-view during action levels. I haven't played Exile 2 (yet), but the other two are great games. Actually, I think the PC-Engine CD Legend of Xanadu games also slip into side-scrolling levels at times, though they also have top-down Ys-style combat on the overworld.
