I'm in the "Zelda isn't an action-RPG" camp (despite what Miyamoto says), although it's very close. I believe the only Zelda that is objectively an action-RPG is Zelda II. The other Zeldas are action-adventures IMO. Metroid and its ilk should not count, though. The only empowerment is through exploration. I know what you were getting at trying to split those off, and I very much agree that Metroid-style games aren't action-RPGs, but they are close cousins. Yep. That's why I'd like to do a retro metroidvania compendium after we all think this one is sufficiently complete. That's why I think it's better not to get too uptight about it and go more with a sort of general feel. I agree with you, I'm leaning towards "feels like", rather than some kinda scientifically accurate distinction. I know there's a ton more games out there we can add to the list!

I have not forgotten about this project! I've just been sidetracked by other distractions.
However, I added these today:
Dragon Slayer Jr.: Romancia (MSX) E.V.O.: Search for Eden (SNES) Gargoyle's Quest (GB) Makaimura Gaiden: The Demon Darkness (GB) Maze of Galious (FC) Mirai Shinwa Jarvas (FC) Odin Sphere (PS2) Romancia (FC) Shiryou Sensen: War of the Dead (PCE) Sorcerian (MSX)
I'll surely add more in the future.

EVO is definitely one of the strangest games I've played. Good stuff (never did finish it though).

EVO is definitely one of the strangest games I've played. Good stuff (never did finish it though). EVO is super cool, I loved it all the way up until the final boss. The final boss is either easy, or spine-shatteringly difficult, depending on what you ultimately evolved into. I gotta play its predecessor some day.

Princess Crown probably belongs there.

Princess Crown probably belongs there. Does Princess Crown have platforming elements? I was under the impression it was a beat 'em up / RPG hybrid.

I don't know that it has platforming, but it's a lot like Odin's Sphere. It's certainly a side-scroller and a RPG, even if the battles are more beat-'em-up-ish.

I can't remember, I think there's experience in it, but the original version of La-Mulana came out in 2005.
Two games that don't have experience, but do have the trappings of an Igavania are the Shaman King: Master of Spirits games on GBA.

Just realized, too, that Popful Mail doesn't actually have levels. I think this is why things get so messy; despite not having levels, the game has all the trappings of an action-RPG. I think Gargoyle's Quest might be in the same boat as well.
