Based off of Dana's level and Adol's, I think I'm getting CLOSE to the converging team up.
Y's VIII continues to be incredible. Nuff' said.

It's legit, that's for sure.
I don't know if I weighed in on prior games, but if stuff like Felghana or Origin didn't do much for you, then the closest you're going to get to those is Ys Seven (which I loved), and Ys IX (which gets close but doesn't best Ys VIII).

Ys Seven (which I loved), and Ys IX (which gets close but doesn't best Ys VIII). Those are much in the same vein as Ys8, but let us not forget: I think that one is actually the closest to Ys8. Xeogred I think you'd enjoy all the modern Ys games.

+1 to Wishlist: - Celceta - Seven - IX - X
I think my issue with Felghana and Origin is that I just couldn't get into the aesthetic of the games much. I know that's weird but hey, we all get subjective about looks sometimes. If they were fully sprite based I may have gotten hooked on them. It's a very handheld look to me from that era, which might be another reason I'm not too big on the DS in ways. According to Steam I put two hours into Felghana and one into Origin. I remember the environments never really doing much for me and being pretty samey and while that isn't much play time, it's wild to see people beat these in about 10 hours. So I guess those are pretty short.
Because of how freaking good VIII is though and giving me a newfound appreciation for the series, I'll maybe consider giving these all another shot again someday.
I do own VI, which I also owned on the PS2 and played a bit back then. I want to say it had really annoying and weird platforming? Like Alundra? lol
Seven does look like that early 3D era I'm not totally loving but a bit on steroids. I'm also kind of thinking all the newer games having a party of characters rather than just Adol, could work in my favor. It's a really fun way to change up the combat between sessions. Which by the way, I've had Ricotta in VIII now for awhile and yeah I don't know if I'll ever use Sahad again for the Breaker types. lol, she's actually really fun to use and much faster than him. More my style.
As I reach the twilight of my DQ journey (mainly just have DQ7 left), and I'm probably midway into my adventures through SMT, it's nice to have a nice big list of Ys games I'm excited to play now. Once I'm done with more turn based stuff too maybe then I'll finally start digging into the Legend of Heroes stuff.

it's wild to see people beat these in about 10 hours Yeah the Napishtim/Felghana/Origin Ys era is very different than the modern Ys era. Rather different schools of game design. Origin took me less than 10 hours: I loved it!
>I do own VI, which I also owned on the PS2 and played a bit back then. I want to say it had really annoying and weird platforming?
Everybody always complains about Napishtim's platforming. I swear I had zero problems with its jumping. Maybe it was because I played the PC version, but the PS2 version is more janky in that regard? I dunno man.
>Seven does look like that early 3D era I'm not totally loving but a bit on steroids
Well Seven was originally a PSP game, that was the platform it originated on. So the graphics are built around the PSP's technical capability. I can tell you the game looked great on a real PSP. But yeah compared to Celceta and VIII, which were built around the Vita's technical capability, sure Seven is not much of a looker.
>Ricotta Once I got her I never used Sahad again. I didn't care for the gun dude either, at all. I've already forgotten his name. He was one of only a few characters that semi-annoyed me. Never used him. As soon as I could have an entire party of girls, that's what I had.
Don't forget about Front Mission 2 and 5. Your tour's not done yet soldier!

Napishtim's dash jump thing was super janky. Not sure if they fixed it on PC. I mean, I've played worse, but the platforming didn't feel great until Felghana.
I thought Seven was amazing - it was my favorite until VIII came along and floored me. But I'm also a big fan of all of the middle and modern series - Ys VI to now are all really fun, but in different ways. They all have that insane frenetic combat that I like, but Seven onward has a little more modern vibe, whereas before that they still keep a lot of the very stripped down, don't waste any time at all DNA.
And yes, Celceta is great. It didn't hit as hard for me as the other modern games, but it's still absolutely worth a play.
I'm always a "mix my party up and try to keep levels even-ish" guy. And Ricotta was cool, the whole "little girls that wield massive weapons" thing. Presea in Tales of Symphonia has that, too.

Yeah, I think I'll give those middle games another chance for sure. Extra curious about them all again. And I know I'm always getting A+ JRPG music with Y's, hah. Downloaded the VIII OST today. Do you guys have a top favorite OST in the series?
Would be fun to watch some player out there stomp things with Sahad. I'm sure it's possible. But everything about Ricotta seems objectively better, outside of her having less HP. Her attacks still hit like a truck, she has more range, she's faster, and several of her Skills have Burn which I'm finding to be really awesome. It was such a pain "breaking" enemies of their type up to this point but now with her, it's more doable.
I will say on Hard mode, it definitely felt like a difficulty spike getting over to the other side of the mountain, with the primordials and all. Which does feel fitting. I'm still doing all the side quests and village stuff along the way, so my gear is usually in top shape. I like how layered some of the better accessories can get. Since I still use Laxia a lot and she's freaking fast, an HB Absorb scarf has been super handy with her.
If there's one nefarious thing to this game, I almost get a hunch the devs made the raids super hard to S rank on a first attempt when you're around the same level. It's much easier to replay them and get S ranks when you're several levels over. But dang, sometimes I'll stomp them getting all the bonuses thinking I'll surely get an S, but it's usually just A's. The S rewards or so dang good too, usually a permanent stat boosting item. But ah well. I might not worry too much about S ranking these all. I love the main quest/exploration so much I want to keep pressing forward. Think I hit around 50% exploration today.

Y's IV: Dawn of Y's has the best tracks, IMO. It's the first CD soundtrack in the series, at least for an original game, and it's PC Engine gold. The Ys VI op is insane, too.
And this is my favorite track, goes insanely well with a fast-paced ARPG dungeon where you just run through everything, and it sounds so different with that vocal sample:
Also look up "The Path of Legend", I'm pretty sure it's your style.

I managed to S-Rank a lot of them, but I don't remember how many. And yeah, the rewards were great.

Do you guys have a top favorite OST in the series? Hard to pick one with so many amazing OSTs in the Ys series. But I immediately thought of this track: That guitar riff at 00:40 is fantastic Adol shreddin'. >difficulty spike getting over to the other side of the mountain, with the primordials That part was a difficulty bump even on Normal difficulty, I don't doubt on Hard it's a spike. >still doing all the side quests and village stuff along the way If you want to get the True Ending, you'll need to do those quests and consistently give gifts to your village folks. And yeah crafting upon crafting is the way to have the very best equipment. Thankfully Ys8 made crafting fun and simple, instead of being a grindy pain in the ass as many JRPGs do. Especially appreciate how you can break down unwanted items into constitute parts to build new stuff. I didn't worry about S-ranking raids, but I often got S-ranks regardless. It was probably easier to do so on Normal difficulty granted. I wouldn't worry about grinding campaign raids, because optional harder raids eventually become available that you can get better stuff from even on A-rank. >Think I hit around 50% exploration today And you've still seen nothing yet! Many surprises to come.
