The solo or whatever is going on at the end of the Ys III (around 4 minutes in) is completely deranged. In a good way. Y's OSTs do a lot of prog rock and metal but this is probably the most psychedelic I can remember it getting.

These Y's tracks go HARD. I'm going to have to play this whole series huh guys?
Here's some I like from 8 that I feel might be a little underrated. Not quite MAX PROG like the usual fan favorite bangers haha...
Soooooooo good. The atmosphere...

Speaking of shredding, this may be my absolute favorite track from Ys I/II, specifically the Chronicles version:
Ys VIII has such a good soundtrack. I think that's a big factor that keeps you playing, too. I think folks consistently underrate how much an incredible score can elevate an experience.

The Xenoblade vibes are strong in this one. Always a big complimentary comparison for me!
I'm convinced I'll just stick to PCE-CD for Y's 3-4 haha. Even though their chiptunes are probably killer too on the other versions.

Ys III in its original form is just a'ight. PCE CD is probably the best platform, but the voice acting... oooooooooof. Felghana is how you do a remake right. (If memory serves, the SNES port is the hardest. It also butchers the soundtrack.)
Ys IV is an odd duck in that it has two versions - one on PCE CD (Dawn of Ys) and one on SNES (Mask of the Sun). And Celceta combines elements of both of those games into one, as well as giving it that modern play style.

The only Ys4 I recognize as canon is Celceta. The other two "Ys4" entries suck.

They don't suck at all, they're really good. But we've been over this. Both are completely different games, and both are worth playing. They're like 5 hours each anyway.
For Ys III, the Genesis version plays a little better than the rest, so that's the one I favor.

I do think the Genny version is good as well, and it's the most faithful rendition of the soundtrack on console.

Guess I'm not surprised. Sigh, we were so spoiled back then. "You love this game? This OST? Check out all these other awesome unique ports of it!" This kind of makes me think of Konami shmups off the top of my head right now. You could expect a multitude of awesome OST's and remixes across various Gradius ports and stuff.
