I plan to go back to Digital Devil Saga after ME3. Join me in that? It's pretty tempting.
I just don't know if I'll hit burnout jumping into that so quickly after SMT3... also I'd probably shelve Arc the Lad Twilight too then. But I don't know if I'll stick with that one anyways.

I've played some Blaster Master Zero III the last few nights. So far... I'm not loving it? Yeah, the engine is the same, but there are elements to it I'm not really caring for. The dash thingy, the counter, the weapon system, the alternate space deal... it's just not clicking for me yet. It took a little time for me to find my feet with BMZII, and I'm hoping it happens here, but it feels like Inti Creates may need to step back from the series at this point. It's almost like they're trying too hard to differentiate from the prequels and putting in elements that don't feel very good in practice to me.

A bad air-dash?
I think I had that similar feeling with 2. Moreso because the difficulty seemed way higher and front loaded than the first Zero, but then I really got into it.
Hopefully it's a grower. I've been excited about it, but I can see how they may have added too many layers.

Well, it's a dash while you're on foot. Not sure yet if the tank gets an air dash. This does feel a bit harder, too, but not insanely so. That may change, however. Guess I'll find out! I mean, I don't plan on not finishing it or anything, there's clearly a baseline of quality here, but I really need for it to get its act together (or I need to, one or the other).
Yeah, BMZII disappointed me in the early going, and then I really got into it. By the end, it was close to the first game, but not quite there. I'd say 8.5 vs. the first game's 9/10. And now that I know what to do, my estimation of the original game on NES has gone up considerably, even with its flaws.

Yeah, if Blaster Master NES had...
- A populating map as you progress to reference - Save points or a password system - Maybe the one-hit gun upgrade protection shield
... Perfection.
Aesthetically it's still my favorite. Top of the line NES graphics and music, with excellent controls.

It's actually remarkable how good it looks and sounds given its vintage. Seriously impressive work by Sunsoft, and it bums me out how they just went from these amazing technical showpieces to contracting out iffy games at best during the 16-bit era.
Just a password system with no other changes would be enough to elevate the original Blaster Master. It's a bit too long for a single session, and definitely too long to give limited continues.

I only have one complaint about the original Blaster Master; There's no way to save your progress. Other than that, it's an amazing game. And it's a stain on my retro gaming career that I still have not yet beaten the game as a result.

I'd very much recommend doing it via save states. Honestly, it's a game that probably didn't have it just for a cost-cutting measure, anyway. Same deal with Rygar, another quite long game that you have to complete in one sitting.
