I only have one complaint about the original Blaster Master; There's no way to save your progress. Other than that, it's an amazing game. And it's a stain on my retro gaming career that I still have not yet beaten the game as a result. For someone that likes challenging games a lot... Blaster Master stages 6-8 are waiting to test you.
The real Demon's Souls starts here:

You ain't wrong. The thing with the last areas is that the tank controls get really fiddly and you'll roll yourself right into some spikes. Being able to disable that ability would have been ideal. There's just so many little tiny things that in hindsight keep it from 10/10 territory, but what's there is still excellent.

Agreed, that's half the battle. It messes with the precision around the edges for your jumps.
As a youngin' I could sometimes make it all the way to stage 8 and those lives disappeared in a blink. Lot of trial and error navigating that place. As I always like to joke too, if there's an interpretation of 8bit hell visually/music wise, stage 8 is it.
I don't think stage 7 is as hard as 6, but it's pretty mazey. Somehow I played this game so much though that it's just hard wired in me to know exactly where to go, even when I replayed it earlier this year. The stage 6-7 bosses are really hard too. The final boss you can cheese a bit, lol.
Nowadays I often wish that stage 5 was a little longer, or had more areas to go through to get to stage 6 with the water traversal upgrade for the tank. It's cool that this stage changes it up and forces you to leave the tank behind for most of it, but I just love that texture set and music so much, I wish there was a bit more to that area topside.

There's not much better than 100%'ing a map. Even across other genres, from Silent Hill, to Metroid Prime, Doom 2016, to SMT3... oh baby I love filling out those maps.

I'm not sure if I'm necessarily going for 100%. I just kept running around in circles and passing the same dead ends over and over again. Then finally I got pissed off and resorted to the process of elimination. However, it's saying a lot that Bloodstained actually makes me want to that. Lately whenever I would get stumped on a Metroidvania game, I would just stop playing.

Yeah I totally read the room wrong here when anayo posted that, out of frustration I'm guessing? I just glanced at the map and was drooling happiness.

Yeah I totally read the room wrong here when anayo posted that, out of frustration I'm guessing? I just glanced at the map and was drooling happiness. I mean... sort of? I think it's more like I wouldn't ordinarily go to these lengths just to figure out where to go next. But Bloodstained makes me want to do that, which is a testament to its high quality. Yeah, I know. I guess Metroidvanias just aren't something I have the patience for unless they're S tier. The games I gave up on with Metroidvania elements in them were Hollow Knight and Wonderboy and The Dragon's Trap, both for Nintendo Switch, and Monster World IV for the Sega Genesis. To my credit, though, I did complete Shantae: Risky's Revenge from the Nintendo DSi e-shop, thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. Attachments:
