Forgot about those weird details. Something tells me adults who wanted an "easy game" didn't roll credits on that one much.
Still a cool game I'd champion for others to check out though.

Easy real-time combat is fine when it's not the only or main focus of the game. It can still be fun in small doses. Easy unusually slow turn-based combat is a drag. Such bad reasoning.
You often hear this idea in interviews with classic RPG developers, though, about wanting to make easy games for people who struggle with action games. This was definitely an idea that circulated in the game industry in the '90s. My theory is it must have been based on older player feedback (which they did pay a lot of attention to - they'd get postcards and letters and stuff) from late '80s / early '90s action games that often were a little too hard for most, often not in the fairest way. But I think some RPG players somehow took that to mean that you couldn't allow any action whatsoever.
From a business viewpoint, it probably made sense for former Squaresoft employees to think that. Notice there are far fewer true action RPGs than turn-based RPGs on the Playstation. There were lots of people (and especially Squaresoft fans) who only played turn-based RPGs back then, even in North America, and when Square tried to mix things up it tended to hurt their sales somewhat. If Koudelka had real-time fighting and especially no random encounters I would have definitely played through it.

If Koudelka had real-time fighting and especially no random encounters I would have definitely played through it. Even with the wonky combat system, this RPG took me less than 11 hours to finish. It's not agonizingly long. And that was without a walkthrough or strategy guide. It's such a unique experience with a somber atmosphere and mature plot, that I'll recommend it. I've literally never played any other RPG like Koudelka. (Yes it's plenty different from Shadow Hearts.)

I tried it during one of our monthly themes, at the same time as Sarge did IIRC. My issue isn't the overall game's length, I know it's not super long. It's that every individual battle was a pain to me because they're so slow. I don't want to put up with that stuff anymore. I could see that everything else was intriguing, though.

You could maybe try overclocking the CPU in DuckStation or something to speed the game up through the battles, heh.

Now that you mention that, I do recall using the fast forward feature in ePSXe to speed up Koudelka's battles. Unfortunately, DuckStation didn't exist back then. But yes fast forward is a big help here.

If I can't play the game in its original state I don't want to play it. There's an abundance of other games to play.

The lower key Cyberpunk 2077 BGM is very good, they lean into Vangelis for sure.

Ex That sounds good at first glance, I'll have to listen to the whole thing. Accurate too for a Saturn racer.
