I'm pretty sure I've heard this in a modern Ys game or something.

Sarge Oh, that sounds extremely Ys. Anything from Ark of Napishtim on. Just found out the composer of YS VI passed away in 2014, btw. RIP.

Glad I'm not the only one that hears it, haha.
That's a bummer about the Ys VI composer - that also had some really great tunes.
EDIT: This is probably the track that's coming to mind more than any.

At the end of the day I guess Falcom just integrated metal (which they already used for boss battles in classic Ys) into jazz fusion (one of the main genres in Japanese game music - all those racing games, etc.) It reminded me of the (amazing) Ys VI op, but they're the same style.

Oh, that's a fantastic track. Good, good stuff. I've got a metal remix of that one from one of the Dwelling of Duels months I've listened to for a long time.

One year from now and I could post this in the retro forum... let that sink in.
Anyways, this came up in my car radio transmitter the other day and has been hitting me so good. It's fascinating coming back to this OST after several years more of retro throwbacks and chiptunes making a comeback. Yet there's still nothing quite like Jake Kaufman's style. It somehow sounds both more retro at times and then more modern than other contemporary throwback games. Like the arpeggios and sound drivers he's using here really echo authentic NES vibes, but then the songs keep evolving to levels the NES never would have been able to handle technically. I'm not sure exactly how involved Manami Matsumae was herself on the OST, but yeah. I have to imagine this is mostly Kaufman's going to town and being amazing.

This is when I do my "well, ackshually" thing - other than some modern mixing on the channels, the whole soundtrack is period-appropriate hardware. It uses the NES plus Konami's VRC6 for the audio, and I've even got the NSF file downloaded somewhere. He and some other folks are incredibly talented at pushing the NES chip to the max. EDIT: Well, it was here at one time, use Wayback Machine to snag. web.archive.org/web/20140701001548/http://biglionmusic.com:80/Shovel_Knight_Music.nsf

Could these songs even fit on an NES cart though? They don't loop quickly and aren't short like most old NES tunes, I always figure due to memory limitations and all. But yeah I'm no expert and honestly not surprised if it's authentic sound tech, no wonder it sounds so on point.
What the heck are these devs doing? I know Shovel Knight got all those expansions and has had cameos in like dozens of games now, but as I joked above, Shovel Knight will be 10 years old next year. Kind of wild they haven't done another big game since I don't think? But I know they help publish some smaller games themselves.

If they tossed enough ROM space at it with a mapper that could handle it, they could have, but yeah, it's a lot. The whole thing is under a megabyte, so by itself it's bigger than any NES game we got. Well, any official game, some unlicensed stuff gets bigger.
