I'd still like to see what it looks like if it didn't have the full-screen Vaseline smear going on, though. If you have a Gameshark, I believe you can remove one of the two anti-aliasing measures the N64 forces onto every game. The first measure requires a mod to remove. I think My Life in Gaming covered it in their N64 episode if you're interested.

Dang, that's almost an argument to get an EverDrive 64. Good stuff.

Just a quick note to say that I'm working on re-beating my final entry for this theme. As I said before, it's a SEGA Genesis platformer. It's also rather long for said genre. There's 14 multi-level stages, and the whole shebang takes about ~3 hours to finish. I played some of it last friday night, saturday night, and I'm about to hit it up again tonight.

Hmm, now I'm wondering what it is. Is it one of the later Sonic games? I know Sonic 3 & Knuckles is pretty long.

Wonder which portion you'll like more, I vastly prefer the S&K levels.

Since the hedgehog's out of the bag, I'll talk about my history with these games. For some reason I had thought both of these games were released simultaneously, but that's not the case at all. Sonic 3 released February 2, 1994, and Knuckles released October 18, 1994. Up until recently I had thought the games released together - probably because of their development history. I mean where Sonic 3 and Knuckles were once going to be the same game, that was later split into two separate titles for financial reasons. Yet upon release the option of a Voltron ability to re-join and become one long game manifested. Eh anyway. I had originally owned Sonic 3 in my junior year of high school, I got it in 1994 not long after it released. Strangely I can't remember how I got the game, maybe it was a gift, or perhaps I bought it, I'm not sure. I do remember beating Sonic 3 exactly once during the first half of my junior year. Later in the second half of my junior year (1995), I loaned Sonic 3 to a girl I was infatuated with (but never dated). The little tease never gave the game back (curse you Clarissa), so that was that. In my senior year of high school, I somehow ended up with a copy of Knuckles. Again I'm not exactly sure how I got it, probably a pawn shop pickup, or perhaps my video game loving uncle-in-law (now removed) gave it to me. I know I beat Knuckles during my senior year in high school, so that was in 1996 or 1997. I also know I only beat it once. Unfortunately since I'd lost my Sonic 3 cart by that point, I couldn't combine Knuckles with it and experience the full glory of the combo.
Since I'd already beaten Sonic 1 & 2 multiple times, I figured giving 3 & K a re-beat was worth it. Except this time, as one unified experience, as they were "meant" to be. Except... Wonder which portion you'll like more, I vastly prefer the S&K levels. I can say there is a distinct difference in the "feel" of the S3 levels versus the S&K levels. The S3 levels are much more choppy, with lots of stop & go, and booby traps everywhere, and are also incredibly long. However the S&K levels flow more smoothly, are less trollish, and not quite as long - thus far. It does "feel" like different level designers constructed the S3 levels versus the S&K levels. Although I haven't done the research to verify if that's true. Here's the level sequencing in the combined game (blue are S3 zones, red are S&K zones): Angel Island Zone Hydrocity Zone Marble Garden Zone Carnival Night Zone IceCap Zone Launch Base Zone Mushroom Hill Zone Flying Battery Zone Sandopolis Zone <-Ex is currently saved here. Lava Reef Zone Hidden Palace Zone Sky Sanctuary Zone Death Egg Zone The Doomsday Zone
So to answer your question Xeogred , so far I've been enjoying the S&K level layouts much more than the prior S3 level layouts. But I've still got a lot of zones left to finish before I can offer my definitive answer.
Edit: BTW I'm playing through the game as Sonic & Tails partnered together.

Yeah, this whole "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" thing is just a weird bit of Internet revisionism. At the time they were quite clearly distinct games, and I remember Sonic 3 being out long (in kid time, anyway) before Sonic & Knuckles came out. I know they were initially conceived as one giant game, but after they were split in two they ended up moving things around so each game would feel complete and have its own distinct feel - I'm pretty sure this included the level order. So in the end Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles ended up being complete games on their own, and the lock-on thing was just a bonus, as far as I'm concerned.
