It would have been interesting if the GREAT DEVIL was an actual puzzle boss fight or something, but it's just a cutscene. Maybe there's a "boss battle" in 2 or 3 haha...

Well, some of my DMC skills are coming back, anyway. Kept getting whooped by the scorpion boss, but finally remembered some of how the mechanics worked. Used Devil Trigger for hits, back up when out and pepper him with the shotgun to build up meter, then go into DT again. Seemed to work well.
I actually believe, outside of the wonky camera angles at times, that the game has aged exceptionally well. It feels good to play, and looks surprisingly nice. I know there are HD remasters, but apparently those versions have issues, so the PS2 version may still be the closest thing to "proper" there is. (But yes, some of the issues are pretty nitpicky.)

The remasters were the first time I played through all of DMC1-3 actually. DMC4 was the first one I owned... so no nostalgia here for me, I absolutely loved DMC1 and DMC3 playing them in full years later. I was exposed to them in passing from friends back in the day, but that's it. I was more into Onimusha during the PS2 era. This tends to be in the minority, but I thought DMC1 was harder than DMC3. It's clunkier and doesn't give you as many abilities to handle situations. In DMC3's case, I got the platinum and beat it on every single difficulty and 100%'d the game, which was insane and one of the hardest accomplishments. It sucks DMC1 doesn't have a level select to easily go back and get everything though, so I wasn't really up for the grind. But yeah, it's no easy game. I also recommend customizing the buttons. The default control scheme for the DMC series is pretty weird. I appreciate that the RE remnants are still there in DMC1 and the BGM was really good. Some areas actually gave off some nice Souls vibes. Visually I thought the remasters were amazing and Capcom did a good job. Anyways, I played a bit of Lolo 2 and... now I don't think I played this one back in the day either. Maybe I did somehow play 3?!? Well this is 25 years ago, I think this just might be an unsolved mystery.
I'm also on floor 3 (each "floor" has 5 levels), and this already seems harder than the first game. Barely anyone has logged this one on HLTB too.

Xeogred : Well, that's more hardcore than me! I played through DMC3 on its normal difficulty, with the original release. That basically means the remaster/Japanese hard mode. Tough stuff for sure. I had a pretty rough time early on with DMC, but now I've caught a groove and I'm up to Mission 12. I'm remembering little tricks here and there that help with this playthrough. Like how effective the shotgun is against those early scythe-wielding wraiths, or how to cancel the grenade gun's recoil to get more shots off. I'm also getting better at managing my Devil Trigger mode, although I somehow haven't managed to extend it yet! Crazy towns. At any rate, I'll probably push towards the end; got to figure I'm near the halfway point. It's not a terribly long game as long as you're not dying a ton. Also, you might as well give Lolo 3 a try, just to see. If it is that one, you need to try to track down that cart.

Alrighty, I'm closing in on the end of DMC. I'll probably finish it up before the weekend. I'm at mission 20 right now, just hopping into the underworld. I've had my share of trouble (that dark knight dude owned me multiple times a few missions ago), but I'm not getting wasted by regular enemies at this point anymore. Having a solid DT helps a lot, and I figure I'll need to stock up for the last fight. I've tried not to use many items, and have reset several times if I burn through too many Yellow Orbs to continue.
My strategy of dodge-rolling/rocket launcher has still worked wonders against most mooks. We will see if I can get through this last boss gauntlet that's sure to be coming my way.

I finished the third area of Soul Blazer tonight, the one where you go underwater and also traverse tropical islands. Talking to dolphins, angelfish, mermaids and such. I thought it was cool how you get the Bubble Armor and can walk around beneath the sea. There's so much stuff I've forgotten since playing through this game 21 years ago. This aquatic region was one of them. I loved it all though, very fun stuff. And I believe I've got 3 or 4 more regions left now. Soul Blazer is longer than I remembered it being!

Soul Blazer is probably my favorite SNES action RPG, now that I think about it. I don't remember having a single issue with it. It was all gravy. I played it long before Actraiser, which probably helped in that the whole reviving-the-world theme was completely fresh to me. I still like it a whole lot more as a game.
I haven't touched a video game in almost two weeks, and I kind of want to prolong that break for a while, so I don't know if I'll have time to participate in this at all. Maybe I'll do a quick run through some beat-'em-ups later in the month.

I wondered what you've been playing toei... guess that explains it. Sarge : Nelo Angelo and the wolf fights were always intense. Have you realized who it is?
I hope you play Onimusha 3 next. Not a lot of people talk about it thesedays. I'd say it's easier than the DMC's for sure.

I don't remember having a single issue with it. Any issues I could point out presently would be nit-picky in the extreme. (For example; I'd rather the sound effects that were recycled from ActRaiser had been unique new sound effects instead.) Soul Blazer has been a seriously well designed, exceptionally well paced action-JRPG thus far. They really don't make 'em like this anymore. Do you periodically take breaks like this? Are you spending time with a different hobby? I'm trying to remember the longest I ever went without playing games, since I owned my first console. I don't think I've ever gone longer than one week without doing as such.
