I suck at Mean Bean Machine!
Some insights: - I find setting up combos to be kind of like a card game such as solitaire. I "set up" a structure that needs a color to trigger it then just layer those on top of each other. I'm not very good at conceptualizing the whole thing in my head at once, I can only keep track of two things at a time. I'll even say aloud while playing, "Need a yellow." or "Need green followed by blue." If those colors don't appear it can really screw me over, because I have to store the non-applicable pieces somewhere and my screen gets more and more cluttered and the likelihood of the opponent scoring a combo and dumping junk on me keeps rising. At that point it basically turns into a game of chance where I can be ballsy and wait for the needed color to string the combo out even further, or play it safe and "cash in" the combo I set up. - Each combo has a corresponding power of 2 score multiplier that goes with it. I don't pay attention to the combo amount (1x 2x 3x etc) but I do pay attention to the power of 2 score multiplier. 32x is enough to fill half the opponent's screen with junk. 64x will completely bury the opponent. Once the music changes, I generally focus on setting up a 64x combo as fast as possible because it's too risky to try for anything higher. - In stage 1, 2, and sometimes 3, the gameplay is languid enough that it's possible to set up insanely high combos. I have gotten 512x a few times and maybe once or twice I got 999x. This gives you an insane amount of points - in the six figure range. In an average game (beginning to end) I'll only get 350,000 or so. So if you're playing for score the first three levels are critically important because you can earn more points there than the whole entire rest of the game.

I did actually beat the story mode twice, for the 360 and then PS3 to get some achievement/trophy on that huge Sega Genesis collection. I think I just kept spamming the Robotnick level until I got some form of easy RNG where he messes up more, lol. Otherwise I was out of luck...
The combo and even general concept of this game messes with me so much, because of how much I grew up playing Dr. Mario instead. Puyo's like some weird fusion between Dr. Mario and Tetris, while Dr. Mario stands out a bit because the little baddies can be placed anywhere in the jar and you've got an objective to take them out (while combo'ing!). Unlike Puyo/Tetris that seem more free form since you start with a blank slate. If any of that makes sense.
I bet others have some cases like this. X puzzle game and its rules makes Y so hard to adapt to because it goes against everything you learned from X, haha.

XeogredYeah that's the truth. I had to practice a bit to get back into Mean Bean Machine because I had been playing Tetris 99 a lot on Nintendo Switch, so my muscle memory was all screwed up.

Man, am I the only one around here that sucks at falling-block puzzlers? Good job, anayo.

Xeogred I tried Mean Bean machines just now, but I had the same problem you just described - it's so similar to Tetris and Dr. Mario and yet different so it seems unnatural to me.

Mean Bean Machine reminds me a lot of Puyo Puyo, alarmingly so (not sure which came first off hand). But the game also looks really fun. I've never played Mean Bean Machine, I didn't know it had a story mode.

Well, Mean Bean Machine is based on Puyo Puyo, so that makes sense. I'm pretty sure PP came first. I think in Japan, it came out on Genesis as PP, but was altered to MBM for the West.
