Still not optimal, of course. But at least it's passable. Are you running on the Windows side or DOS? DOS is much friendlier on the requirements. I'm running Windows 98. I felt brave enough to play on period accurate hardware, but not to fiddle with DOS and all the stuff that entails. 320x240 is okay though, I had to play all my FPS games at that resolution so far. I used to play at that resolution as a kid so it's part of the experience for me.

There should be a "boot to DOS" mode with '98, and I think all the default settings will likely work. It's probably worth the hassle on a machine like that to have the DOS side up and running. Probably the only thing you'll need to make sure works right is your sound card, but most games have an auto-detect function for your settings, especially ones that late. That may be why our experiences have differed so much. I used to jump to DOS any chance I could get to get out from under the operating system overhead. You're not going to break anything over there, either, unless you go all willy-nilly typing stuff like "del *.*" in folders.

Sarge Just curious, did you ever have a performance difference between DOS vs Win98se? I only went native DOS over Win98se with support issues (like Utlima 8.) If there is a difference, then I will need to fix things...

paulofthewest : Are you talking about the DOS mode in Win98? If you're kicking to full DOS (as opposed to running a DOS game in a box while still in Windows), there shouldn't be any difference in running there compared to running, say, a machine with just DOS 6.1 installed. I used to kick to the DOS mode in Win95 all the time, and it worked swimmingly. As far as game specs are concerned, some games actually work about as well in Windows as they do in DOS. But I know in the case of MW2, the minimum specs are pretty different (66 MHz 486 DX2 for DOS, 100 MHz Pentium for Windows, plus a doubling of required ram from 8MB to 16MB).

Thanks for the tip (similar to Ex strongly recommending I play Quake with a mouse when I no $#!7 was about to play it with just a keyboard as I did during childhood). I had a suspicion Windows may have been holding back my performance but I thought I was just being superstitious. I'll try this and see if it makes my games run any better.

anayo : If you don't have a shortcut of some kind to exit to DOS, you can always make a boot disk as well. That, or pound F8 while booting up to get to the boot menu, and choose to go to command-prompt only.

That, or pound F8 while booting up to get to the boot menu, and choose to go to command-prompt only. Oh man that's freakin' awesome. I thought I would have to install a bespoke DOS-only partition to do that. I knew you could run DOS software within Windows but I didn't know you could strip Windows away and boot straight into DOS with nothing else. I'm definitely going to try that.

Yep yep, it's built right into Win95/98. No need for a new partition or anything.

Am I the only one who hates fighting the same people over and over in games? I'm talking about those recurring villains that show up multiple times in RPGs. I beat you twice already, can you just leave the game forever please? It feels like a waste of time to me. I swear this one loser asshole in SRW Gaiden has been in 5 of the last 7 battles, and every antagonist keeps doing that too.
I was still enjoying the game until now, and I'm still interested in how the story's going to wrap, but with about 10 battles left, it's getting pretty tiresome. Every battle has reinforcements now, too, which is always a drag in SRPGs.
