How can you not love that guys theme!? I was still enjoying the game until now, and I'm still interested in how the story's going to wrap, but with about 10 battles left, it's getting pretty tiresome. Every battle has reinforcements now, too, which is always a drag in SRPGs. Man I think Front Mission 3 only did that like twice in 60 battles, thankfully so. Never a fan of that either or weird sudden mid battle rule changes. Feels like something FFT pulled a bunch...

At least his theme music rocks. EDIT: Ninja'd by Xeogred!

Well, despite my rant earlier, the game is still fun. At this point the reinforcements don't bother me as much because I fully expect each of the six battles I have left to have them. Good thing is they're scripted, rather than reinforcements that pop up at specific turns, so there's never been more than one batch. Though the later battles are much longer, the cool thing about them is just how powerful your units get, and how many options you have to build to an incredibly powerful hit. The enemy bosses are starting to follow suit, though. I just beat one who was a real monster, could act twice a turn and almost always attacked twice per act, for a total of four attacks in a turn. Lost a character that battle, which I never like (there are financial penalties, but no perma-death), and realized afterward it could have been prevented. Oh well.

Well, I guess unless something changes tomorrow, I've finished my mech run. Here's the rundown: 39) MechWarrior 2 (PC) (8.0) (3/2) (7 hours) (*) 40) The Adventures of Star Saver (GB) (6.0) (3/7) (0.75 hours) (*) 41) Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger (GB) (4.5) (3/8) (0.5 hours) (*) 42) Captain Commando (ARC) (7.0) (3/8) (0.6 hours) 43) Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness (ARC) (8.0) (3/8) (0.75 hours) (*) 44) Xardion (SNES) (5.0) (3/9) (3 hours) (*) 45) Future Cop: LAPD (PC) (7.5) (3/12) (7 hours) (*) 48) E-SWAT (ARC) (5.5) (3/16) (0.33 hours) (*) 49) E-SWAT (GEN) (7.5) (3/16) (1.33 hours) (*) 53) Ranger X (GEN) (8.5) (3/26) (1.5 hours) (*) 54) Aquales (X68K) (8.0) (3/27) (2.5 hours) (*) Not too shabby, actually! Of course, only one of these is what I think of when someone mentions "mech games", and that's MechWarrior 2. And I admit I really dug it a lot - way more than I was expecting. Still gotta figure out group fire, though. Future Cop was also fun, but needed to have less "plummet to your doom" scenarios. Aquales was better than expected, too - I always figured they'd get the grapple physics all wrong, but I should have known Ex wouldn't lead me astray! I was also pleasantly surprised by E-SWAT on Genesis - there's way more going on there in terms of variety than I expected. But the real dinger for me was Ranger X. I have bounced off the game a few times, in that I played it for five minutes and said "nope". With some impetus to actually learn the game, I thought it was super cool, and I'm going to be keeping an eye out for it in retro stores. I'd love to have my own copy. Also, just over 25 hours of mech madness this month! Not too shabby. Still didn't beat out Ex or Xeogred , though. Actually, I'm not sure I'm going to beat out toei or anayo, either, haha! But it's safe to say we all leaned into this theme pretty hard! Xeogred : Forgot to congratulate you on finishing FM3. It's still on my list, along with finishing off FM4. I was really digging that game, and dropped it for whatever reason. The ally links can make you absolutely overpowering in that game if you know what you're doing.

Sarge I think I spent more than 25 hours on this theme, too. I have four battles left in SRWGMKLOTE (actual full acronym). It's still technically possible that I'll finish it tomorrow, but I'm really tired tonight so it might have to wait until Wednesday (I expect all of these to be long battles). Apart from that, I finished... E-SWAT Genesis and Devastator. And Earnest Evans, which has to be a mecha game, cause there's no way a human would move like that, right?

Yeah, I was just adding that to my other post. It dawned on me that I probably didn't beat anyone out this month in time spent. Also, if Earnest Evans isn't a mech, he's an android. Either way, he clearly isn't human.

Sarge Now, hear me out on this, this is just a fan theory, but I think Earnest is a mecha piloted by Annet. Think about it... El Viento stars Annet, as does Annet Futatabi. Earnest Evans is the middle game of the trilogy, yet we're supposed to believe Annet doesn't star in it? So yeah. As for that level where you see her drive a car, that's actually an astral projection created by her spiritual powers. Everything you fight is also a giant mecha. Also the whole game is a documentary of things that really happened in real life that they don't want you to know.

39) MechWarrior 2 (PC) (8.0) (3/2) (7 hours) (*) 45) Future Cop: LAPD (PC) (7.5) (3/12) (7 hours) (*) Proud of you for beating these, you definitely stepped outside your usual genres (and were rewarded). Also glad you gave these a shot and agreed with me on them. I only recommend bad games to toei. Definitely one of the more active Club Retros we've ever had, insofar as participant count goes. Next month may prove to be a zinger as well. I have four battles left in SRWGMKLOTE (actual full acronym). I am interested to know how long that one takes to finish. And Earnest Evans, which has to be a mecha game, cause there's no way a human would move like that, right? I always thought of him as a possessed marionette.

Good grief, though, that acronym.

Ex So if he's a possessed marionette, and we, as the players, control him, does that make Earnest meta-commentary on the nature of video games? Also, I really don't know how long SRWGMKTEL (I think that's a more accurate acronym... The Elemental Lords, not The Lord of Elemental of Lord of the Elemental or whatever) takes to beat, as it doesn't record your time, and I don't keep track. There are 45 scenarios. The first half of these are usually shorter, while in the second part they're always at least an hour long, at least for me. 2-3 of them don't include battles at all, while I think the longest I've seen is maybe... an hour and a half? So I'd guesstimate 35 hours. 30 if you're quick. Also, there are many choices you make that affect your route through the game, so while a full playthrough is 45 scenarios, there exist I think 106 or 107 in the game. So lots of replay value, but like Xeogred, I can't see myself replaying through the entirety of a SRPG right after finishing it, even if it's really good.
