Actually, I also think the term "mascot" brings to mind sports mascots, which are almost always cute renditions of either animals or people with exaggerated features. Yeah "cute" or "cartoonish" is an important distinction. As far as the dictionary definition: "A person, animal, or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure especially to bring them good luck."www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mascotLooks like next month will be a situation where each participant has to vet their own inclusions, insofar as being a "mascot platformer". Still, I believe we've reached a homogenized concept of what a "mascot platformer" is via the last few posts.

Does Mega Man count as a mascot platformer?

In my opinion, no. Mega Man was never recognized as being part of that genre. It's a bit more serious in tone, and it's not a pure platformer - it's what some an "action-platformer", in that fighting (in that case, shooting) is a big part of the gameplay. Mascot platformers are mostly all about jumping.
Also, I'll point out that *most* mascot platformers star anthropomorphic animals. There are exceptions, Mario being basically the father of the genre, but I'd say after Sonic that became the thing to do.

toeiGood point, I think Mega Man has too much shooting to be a mascot platformer. Otherwise he comes very close.

While I think of Mega Man as a mascot, I don't think of his games as pure platformers. Shooting is just as important as jumping in his games. So I wouldn't call his games mascot platformers. But if somebody wanted to, based on MM series' cartoony/cuteness factor, I wouldn't fault them either.
I really think we'll have to independently vet games for ourselves next month. This genre is probably the most subjective we've run through Club Retro yet.

Yeah, I think Mega Man could fit, but it's not the first thing that comes to mind for sure.
Of course, Ratchet & Clank has a ton of blasting, but feels firmly in the mascot-platformer bin. It's still my opinion that the series in a lot of ways is Mega Man in 3D done right.

Dang, you're right, on-foot segments would have been way more fun in that style.

I thought they tried to do that in Star Fox Assault but people didn't like it for some reason.

I thought they tried to do that in Star Fox Assault but people didn't like it for some reason. People didn't like it, because Star Fox is about flying and shooting, not running around on foot and shooting. Also the on foot implementation was not polished well. I say this as someone who has personally beaten Star Fox: Assault.
