Everyone seems to prefer DQV on DS as well here, so... I dunno. I think DQVI is the better game by a long shot, although I did enjoy the DS version more than the SFC one. One of these days I might run through the PS2 port.

Awesome, I love Dragon Quest VI (but I'm a bigger fan of part five). Keep us updated on your progress through the game (and your opinion). The last time I played (and finished) it, the NoPrgress translation patch just got released (which is almost 20 years ago. Sheesh, time flies by...).

Heh, that's the patch I'm playing. v.90_2b or something. Sarge: I really enjoyed the DS versions of DQ4-5, so I did eventually score a loose cart of DQ6 at least. I didn't love doing that, but at least I have it around if I want to check that version out too someday. Oddly enough, the DQ6 DS prices seem "lower" right now sitting at $109, when DQ5 DS is now going for $350. DQ4 DS is $195-249 New. Heh, who knows. I'm sure the pandemic is making rare JRPG prices pretty crazy this past year or so too. Glad I got that trilogy in hand myself though.

Funny the DQ thread was brought bumped back up, because I've been thinking about my approach to it lately. I have been playing this series rather scattershot. I'd like to get back to playing it in order instead. Which means I've still got parts 2, 3, 6, 7, and 11 left. Here's what I'm thinking as to platforms:
2 = GBC 3 = SFC 6 = DS 7 = 3DS 11 = PS4
The only thing I'm a little iffy on, is if I should play 3 on GBC or SFC. Both have pros and cons. If anybody here has beaten DQ3 on GBC and SFC, I'm listening as to which platform you think is best for the game.

I have beaten DQ3 in all three of its forms. (Well, I guess there's more if you count the mobile port, but that appears to be based on the SNES version anyway.)
All three are good, but...
- NES is definitely the most archaic form of it. It's still balanced really well compared to what came before, but there are some quality-of-life additions in later versions. - SNES is the prettiest, no question. It adds a new class (Thief), and also expands weapon options for a couple of classes (Iron Claw is no longer the best non-cursed item for Fighters). - GBC is almost identical to the SNES version, although with a downgrade in graphics (but still animated monsters!) and a "Monster Medal" system that is honestly pretty superfluous.
So... I'd say go SNES, unless you really want to experience it in its original incarnation.

Ex : And you kept bugging me to skip straight to DQ8!
That said, after DQ6 I'll probably go to DQ8 (PS2) and DQ11 (PS4) next, then go back to DQ7 (3DS). From what I've gathered DQ7 is probably more for the hardcore fans since it's so freaking long, but at this point I'd consider myself a big fan. So, I don't have any hesitation about DQ7 and am excited to get to that one. I'm just more excited for DQ8 and DQ11. Plus it'll be fascinating to see the series' big jump to 3D and some cool fully realized Toiryama/DQ worlds, along with orchestrated Sugiyama.
I will probably play DQ9 when I'm "out of options" for this series. It looks very average compared to the rest and not that interesting. But I'll give it a shot down the road.

You should save DQ8 for when you are in a lull and think there's no more good JRPGs. Then play DQ8 and have your faith restored in humanity.

XeogredHaving played (in chronological order): DQ1->DQ7->DQ8->DQ2 I don't see a big deal playing them out of order. While the games are similar (coming of age/save the world story), they all can stand by themselves. An yes, DQ7 does test your patience with length and job system, but I absolutely loved the episodic nature of that game. When you get into the groove it was like watching a new episode of your favorite series night after night. Without giving away too much you have sections you must restore one by one and each have their own plot. Some you get return to later in the game when you have progressed and continue the story arc. That said, yes DQ8 is great. I spent so much time in that arena.

I am glad I played DQ1-3 in order. That was some nice payoff. But yeah beyond that, I can see how order isn't too important. For me I'm just enjoying seeing the natural progression of the series as it went. I also decided this when DQ4 got me so hooked, I knew I probably wanted to play all of them anyways.
That said, I'm not an OG like Sarge here who actually played all the NES games first and I've jumped around various versions, haha. Same with FF though. I couldn't get into the NES versions of FF1-FF2 but FF3 was legit. I'll probably give the NES DQ's a quick look someday.
