Majora's Mask:Before you yell at me, I know, I KNOW! The trouble is, I didn't get an N64 until way late in the game (Gamecubes were already out, and had been for a couple of years). Anayo loaned me the N64 technically (But it's been over a decade so I'm calling it mine), and along with it he gifted/loaned me a copy of Ocarina of Time. I played the hell out of it. In the days leading up to the next Christmas, I even went back and got myself Biggoron's Sword. That Christmas, my little brother gave me Majora's Mask. I also, received a Sega Genesis with a small collection of games (once again courtesy of Anayo, that fellow has a long track record of hooking me up) and an Original Xbox with a few games. So, I sat down with LOZ:MM immediately but by the time I got to the water temple I got wicked frustrated and also kind of fatigued of Link in general having just finished OoT. Also, I found the time cycle to cause more irritation than intrigue, but I feel like I'm in the minority on that. Fast forward a few months and my bro guilts me into giving it another shot, only I can't really seem to orient myself in the game again. I'm posting this because I think I've given it enough time that I won't hate myself from starting over from the very beginning. In fact, part of me (the part of me that clearly doesn't learn from mistakes given that I'm about to recreate my initial problem) wants to make 2018 the year of Zelda and try to play through as many of the main console ones I've missed (which includes Wind Waker and some that I don't think I can talk about). FFVII:Relatively early in the game, some punk stole a unique item. I reloaded my game and realized I'd lost about an hour and a half of play. Also I missed Yuffie in the beginning. Also I was in Grad School. Maybe I'll get back to it one day. In a weird way I love Majora's Mask and don't have serious issues with it, but let me sum it up like this... I've gone back and replayed OoT probably ~10 times over the years across the N64, GC, and VC versions (and I'm excited to get the 3DS remake eventually). But Majora's Mask I've only beaten once, haha. If you got to the water temple in that one, I believe that's third dungeon? There's only four... that's my major complaint with it. The game is far more fetch quest driven with the town and doesn't have a lot of dungeons like OoT did. But the 4th dungeon is one of the craziest and most unique dungeons in the 3D Zelda's, even to this day. I did like the difficulty bump from OoT overall. The beginning I've played through again once or twice though and it's a slog, so just a warning. It takes like an hour to get to a point of being able to save. Zelda is my favorite franchise, but that's a big goal for 2018 there... the 3D Zelda's are huge undertakings haha. Don't burn yourself out! Yuffie sucks! But yeah it's really weird how her and Vincent are semi-optional, yet have some integral parts in the story and side quests if you get them. Really weird design idea... it might be overrated to most, but I still love FF7. It's my favorite next to FF4-FF6 and one I've gone back to a few times over the years.

Despite owning Majora's Mask in two different formats, I still have not played it yet. Sarge has made me afraid of it!
FFVII... I'll just say I'd give it a 7/10 on a good day. I understand why it reached to the level of popular opinion it did, I just don't share those same sentiments.

Haha! I mean, it's not bad, but it's not what I'm looking for in a Zelda. But it's also very different, so if vanilla Zelda has you bored, give it a go. I'd definitely go with the 3DS version, though. The extra polish helped me push through it. I'd say it's a 7/10 game; good, not great. I'd say the same for FFVII. I enjoyed it, sure, but I distinctly remember being a bit disappointed by it. When you see a progression from Final Fantasy II to III to Chrono Trigger, it just sets expectations way too high.

Maybe the 3DS version would hold your interest better. It's mostly the N64 one, except the graphics look like a Gamecube game and it's portable. The N64 versions have an undying charm, but the 3DS remakes could be considered the "definitive" versions.

Oh, wait, can we bring up the 3DS version? It's not that old, even if the base game is.
Not a massive difference, though, except for the graphical polish and some small quantity of life changes.

Whew, I didn't break the rules a second time... yet.

So to update this, I'm working through DKC3 rather slowly, but I've also been playing Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the side. I've never actually put much time into the game, despite it having a quite good reputation. I've been relatively impressed so far considering this was a game in the launch window, and there's just a ton of off-the-wall stuff, which probably shouldn't be a surprise given that it's Goemon.

A couple things.
EarthBound and Phantasy Star Online are two of the best Japanese RPGs ever.
EarthBound is probably my third favorite video game (and RPG) ever, just behind Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. It's poignant and goofy at the same time, and totally brilliant. And it predates twee and hipster shit, don't even let that be a concern. People tend to overthink the game these days; it's really just a well-written well-designed JRPG with some really compelling and original concepts. Play it.
As for PSO, if you're playing solo (which I actually think is quite fun), just go for the Dreamcast original. Otherwise exhaustion will have set in by the time you hit Episode II and it'll just feel like padding (Episode II and very cut and paste, lots of reused assets). As for the game itself, it's a straightforward quest/loot hack and slash ARPG. But the best one ever made. Excellent controls and beautiful aesthetics. One "town" and four big ass dungeons. That's it. And that's all you need. It is grindy but so damn fun I don't care.
Stuff I haven't played? Plenty of PlayStation RPGs, I suppose, as I didn't own the system during its heyday. I recently obtained the first two Suikoden games, I need to give those a spin.
