I think Just Breed is also the only game that actually used the full audio capabilities of the MMC5 mapper. It really does look like quality, would love to play through it some day. (I could do it for Club Retro, couldn't I? )

It's the best NES SRPG. Not that there are a ton, but yeah, it's good. It's kind of Shining Force + Langrisser, since you have RPG towns and the main characters are generals with troops IIRC.

The box art is above average: Being an SRPG hound this is on my radar now. HLTB says around 12 hours to beat, not shabby for 8-bit.

Yeah, I love that art. I've actually got a complete copy of the game - the manual has some cool stuff in it, too.

Dude can draw. I'm pretty sure I watched the 3X3 Eyes OVAs, and I tried reading the (much longer) manga, and I never could figure out if the dude is supposed to be blind or what. I think he actually opens his eyes for like one second at one point. Notice how on the Just Breed cover, it's the girl who has her eyes closed and the guy who has them open. Ex About as short as a SRPG gets, honestly. I'm still hoping you play some Langrisser and Growlanser eventually, those are important series within the genre, and very good.

The Just Breed fami cart is neat. Looks like a Famicom cart designed to resemble an NES cartridge. Good game too, of course.

I'm still hoping you play some Langrisser and Growlanser eventually I will, though not sure where to start with either series honestly. Would be cool to play SRPGs as tough as FM2 and FM5 were. I'd be surprised if those two series get that tough.

Ex For Langrisser, I think Langrisser II on the Genesis is the hardest one. The original Langrisser (released as Warsong in America) is also significantly harder than all the later remakes. I ended up playing the late '90s PC remake, though, cause I don't like perma deaths in SRPGs, and the interface is faster and nicer. Even with Langrisser 2, I played the expanded SNES remake Der Langrisser instead because it has alternate routes. I think I chose the one where you join with the enemy halfway through, and the transition ended up being kind of jarring, so maybe it'd be better to play the main route on the Genesis, especially if you want more challenge. The later games aren't super hard. Growlanser definitely requires some thought, but it's not crazy hard or anything either though there are some tricky battles. I'd say start with 4 (Wayfarers of Time) cause it's the best, or III. Or if you want to play them in order, start with II (which isn't like the rest as it has no real town sections - it's all battles), unless the fan translation of the original drops before then (hoping for some HRG effect here).

toeiThanks for the clarifications on those series, makes it simpler to approach. I do hope we eventually see all of the mainline Growlanser entries fan patched into English.

Yeah, I feel like the fourth game is the most fully-realized. Really, really fun stuff.
Loving that 3x3 Eyes cover, too. That guy definitely has style - it's not just generic-looking anime.
