I set up the RA image translation service on my machine, and tested a few things. It's a lot spottier with Japanese, as you would guess (only tried Albert Odyssey so far), but with French, it's very solid. And it just so happens Surging Aura has a French translation. (And a Russian one, which I believe is based on the French.)
Honestly, I'm still surprised no one has gotten hold of that translation and put it into English.

It's unclear whether that translation is any good. The text is very, very sparse, which made me wonder if they just cut off a bunch of text to make the translation fit, or whether it just had a very underdeveloped story.

No idea. I mean, it reads like I'd expect the intro to that sort of game to read.

No idea. I mean, it reads like I'd expect the intro to that sort of game to read. I played several hours into the french translation when it came out, and there's very little dialogue past the big intro scene. I'm talking early NES / Phantasy Star 3 levels of sparsity. Eventually I just decided I'd wait for an eventual English translation to give it another chance, since I had my suspicions about that one. Terminus was responsible for an absolutely insane number of translation (including the french Samurai Shodown RPG patch - wouldn't a translation of that game be timely now that the series is back?), so I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out they botched them.

Makes me wish I knew French. I was picking up on a few things, though, and I remember a tiny bit from when I got to visit there.

Honestly, I'm still surprised no one has gotten hold of that translation and put it into English. It is weird. I figured M.I.J.E.T. would have done it by now.

The 1991 Famicom release Otaku no Seiza: Adventure in the Otaku Galaxy has been fan translated into English as The Constellation Nerdulus - An Adventure in the Otaku Galaxy. This game is a sci-fi JRPG. www.romhacking.net/translations/4971/The 1996 PC-98 release Tuned Heart has been fan translated into English. Some of that sprite work for Tuned Heart looks fantastic.

Honestly, I'm still surprised no one has gotten hold of that translation and put it into English. It is weird. I figured M.I.J.E.T. would have done it by now. M.I.J.E.T. hasn't been active in like 9 years, as far as I can tell. At least, that's when his last release came out. But I think there actually is an active-ish Surging Aura project going on. Of course we've been hearing about projects to translate it since the days of Eidolon's Inn or whatever that group was called, so... Meanwhile, somebody has translated Idol Hakkenden again, who knows why. It's that Natsume graphic adventure about a wannabe idol that both Sarge and I played last year. The RDNH newspost about it is kind of funny: "...Polinym, currently the company’s only member, knew literally nothing of this game prior to translating it. He refused to look up any information about it unless absolutely necessary." Do you think he didn't even know it was already translated? "The W.F.C. offers a truly unique experience for players. The game’s text was written not just to be a mere translation of the original, but enjoyable writing that would’ve appeared had the game been an American product." Had the game been an American product in 1989, the writing would have been atrocious and truncated and in no way enjoyable. Also, the name of his translation group is "Woolsey Fan Company", and that post was written by the guy himself, so he's basically referring to himself in the third person the entire time and calling himself a "company".

Eh, it's a little bit of self-promotion. Doesn't bother me too much. And ironically, using that name aims at what style they're going for. I don't see myself playing through the game again, though. At least it's not a misguided transliteration like some folks do, though.
I also wonder if some of these hacking projects could be added to a potential work portfolio to show to employers? Seems like if they thought it was a solid job, they'd be willing to hire.
