I've heard it was absolute garbage, and I'm inclined to believe it, because it's the first Game Gear RPG, and it's by Japan Art Media, who made Lunar: Dragon Song. Actual quote from the romhacker, supper, on the romhacking boards, about the game's tendency to put brackets around words all over its script: "It's really the least of the game's problems anyway... but don't get me started " But we've briefly discussed this before, and now the game is actually translated, so I'll give it a shot and see for myself. It's worth nothing that the fan translation lets you turn off random encounters at will. This is cool if you don't mind taking a more content-touring approach, but it makes me suapect that that the encounter rate is probably atrocious. BTW, these guys (supper, cccmar and TheMajinZenki) seem to have really found their niche in Game Gear translations. They also did Moldorian (which is the second best GG RPG, after Defenders of Oasis), Zenki, the four Madou games, Last Bible (the GG version of the game that came out as Revelations: Demon Slayer on the GBC), that Godzilla strategy game and a few others. Off the top, I think that leaves only Ninku among the GG games that would really benefit from a translation, which is a strange VS fighter / RPG hybrid.

I've heard it was absolute garbage Well it could very well be, especially with that quote you mentioned inferring as such. I'd still like to see The Quiz Gear Fight!! and Super Momotarou Dentetsu III get translated, but I have my doubts either will.

Gamefaqs has a lot of garbage users, so who knows. Just the other day I got an email to advise me that someone had left a comment on one of the two FAQs I've written, so I logged in (which I never do) just to see what it was, and... it was some completely random antisemitic comment which obviously had nothing to do with the game or the FAQ or me. But untranslated RPGs tend to draw some curiosity. Most likely a few people tried the game in Japanese, saw it had a high encounter and the graphics were kinda bad, and gave it a low rating.

Yeah... sounds familiar. I have a lot of reviews posted on GameFAQs, so it's not uncommon for me to get comments on my reviews. The comments are almost always negative. Stuff like: "This was a stupid review your a idiot." or "Bad review, i dont agree With anything because this Game is Awesume". Once in a while I get positive feedback, but the ratio drastically skews negative. I don't mind the drive-by slander, because I don't put a lot of emotion into giving a shit what random people think on the internet anyway. Especially not GameFAQs users.
I do appreciate well articulated informed dissenting opinions though, because sometimes that makes one aware of alternate perceptions one would miss otherwise. Even if one doesn't ultimately agree with those perceptions, it's valuable to know they exist.

I am heartened, though, that there are a few reasonable discussions in the Classic Gaming board and the various retro system subboards (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.). I make sure to occasionally post over there, and hopefully a few might consider popping in here as well. The "Poll of the Day" board is an absolute dumpster fire, though.

Apparently there is an updated retranslation of Phantasy Star now. www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-ENI have heard some folks point out that the first line in the game (where the soldiers have killed Alis' brother) is still wrong, apparently, so there have been some liberties with flavor text. Something about the retranslation sounding more proclamatory to the citizenry, as opposed to sounding like jack-booted thugs abusing their power.

I'm glad to see DS translations coming out at a decent pace. Wonder if this one is any good, or if it's another bleh anime game? Only one way to find out, I suppose!
